What Portsmouth Boss John Mousinho Have Said After Fratton Park Victory Against Blackburn Rovers

John Mousinho felt his Portsmouth side ultimately deserved the three points against Rovers despite not being able to kick on in the second half.

Josh Murphy’s goal after 20 minutes proved to be the decisive moment at Fratton Park as Pompey moved seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Mousinho hailed his side’s professionalism to see out the game but admitted results are all that really matter at this stage of the campaign.

“I am delighted with the result. The performance was good in patches, I thought we did enough just about to win the game or deserving to win the game,” he told BBC Solent.

“There is plenty we can do better but I think the nervousness we probably displayed after going a goal up probably married up with the occasion and how we have been over the last couple of weeks.

“What was really pleasing for me in the second half – I spoke two weeks ago about not being professional, seeing out the game and making the right decisions.

“I actually thought we did that much better in the second half and whenever we did make a mistake, we didn’t compound it with another.

“We dealt with everything Blackburn threw at us. From that perspective, really happy. Loads of things we can improve on but at this stage of the season, it is just about winning the game.”

Rovers had more possession but struggled to put pressure on Nicolas Schmid in the Portsmouth goal.

“It is one of those strange ones, the goal sort of did change the game,” Mousinho added.

“I thought we played some decent football up until we scored, we were a real threat particularly down the left and we actually got down the right a couple of times.

“But once we scored, we sat off five yards from being really aggressive in the first half hour. We ended the first half like we started the second – just a bit down and lacking energy.

“That is why we wanted to make the change early. It is an interesting game to dissect but again, at this stage of the season, we just needed the win.”
