PHILLIES COULD MAKE A SHOCKING BRYSON STOTT TRADE TO FIX THEIR INFIELD PROBLEM

The Philadelphia Phillies have a major decision to make this offseason, and one proposed trade could change the future of their infield.

With Alec Bohm and Luis Arraez entering free agency, Dave Dombrowski must figure out how to rebuild a unit that underwent significant changes during the 2026 season. One possibility involves trading second baseman Bryson Stott to the Texas Rangers for third baseman Josh Jung, then potentially bringing Arraez back to fill the hole at second base.

It is an intriguing idea. Jung would give Philadelphia a right-handed bat with the potential to improve its production against left-handed pitching, while Stott could provide Texas with an athletic, controllable second baseman.

However, the proposal comes with a major question: Would upgrading at third base be worth sacrificing Stott’s defense, baserunning, and long-term value?

The Phillies have World Series ambitions, and their offseason decisions must be about more than simply moving players around the diamond. They need to build a lineup capable of producing consistently when the stakes are highest.

WHY THE PHILLIES’ INFIELD NEEDS ANOTHER OVERHAUL

Philadelphia’s 2026 infield was shaped by the decision to acquire Arraez. The move forced the team to shuffle several established players, with Bryce Harper moving to the outfield, Bohm switching positions, and Stott moving from second base to third.

Now, with Bohm and Arraez potentially departing in free agency, the Phillies could be facing another round of changes.

The most straightforward move would be returning Harper to first base. That would give Philadelphia an opportunity to pursue an impact right fielder while reconsidering its options at second and third.

The challenge is finding the right combination of offense, defense, and financial flexibility.

Bohm remains a familiar option, but re-signing him would mean betting on a rebound after a disappointing regular-season campaign. His strong October showing may help his case, yet Philadelphia must evaluate the entire season rather than allow a short postseason stretch to determine its decision.

The Phillies cannot afford to overlook a chance to improve simply because a potential replacement is already familiar with the organization.

JOSH JUNG COULD GIVE PHILADELPHIA THE RIGHT-HANDED BAT IT NEEDS

Jung is the centerpiece of this proposed trade.

According to the FanSided report, the Rangers third baseman hit .299/.365/.462 with 12 home runs in 104 games during the 2026 season.

Those numbers suggest a productive hitter who could help Philadelphia address one of its roster concerns: the need for more right-handed offensive production.

The Phillies have relied heavily on left-handed power from Harper and Kyle Schwarber. Both players can change a game with one swing, but a lineup becomes more difficult to neutralize when it has dependable threats from both sides of the plate.

Philadelphia’s reported .705 OPS against left-handed pitching in 2026 illustrates why adding a productive right-handed hitter could be appealing.

Jung’s reported .366/.448/.545 line against left-handers would make him particularly interesting for the Phillies if those numbers hold up under closer examination.

He would not need to become the team’s biggest star to make a difference. Philadelphia would benefit from having another hitter capable of punishing opposing managers for turning to a left-handed reliever in a critical inning.

Jung could also provide an upgrade at third base if the organization believes his offensive production and defensive performance represent a better overall package than its other available options.

Still, one productive season does not automatically make a player the answer. The Phillies would need to examine Jung’s health history, defensive consistency, underlying hitting metrics, and future salary commitments before committing valuable assets.

WHY THE RANGERS MIGHT CONSIDER BRYSON STOTT

From Texas’ perspective, trading Jung would only make sense if the return addressed a meaningful organizational need.

The FanSided proposal points to the Rangers’ desire to become younger, more athletic, and more dynamic. It also identifies second base as a potential area for improvement, with top prospect Sebastian Walcott viewed as a possible future option at third.

Stott could give Texas an established major-league player rather than forcing the organization to rely entirely on an unproven solution.

His defensive ability, baserunning, and experience would be attractive to a team looking to improve its athleticism. He also offers the potential for several years of team control, depending on his contractual status and service-time details.

For the Phillies, however, that is precisely what makes the proposal difficult.

Stott is not simply a replaceable name on the roster. He provides value that may not always appear in his batting average or home-run totals.

A trade would require Philadelphia to believe that Jung’s offensive upside outweighs what Stott contributes defensively and on the bases.

The Rangers would also have to agree that the proposed return is sufficient. Their interest in becoming more athletic does not guarantee that they would make Jung available, particularly if they view him as an important part of their immediate plans.

The deal is a hypothetical trade proposal, not a confirmed negotiation between the clubs.

THE LUIS ARRAEZ REUNION IS WHERE THIS PLAN BECOMES COMPLICATED

Trading Stott for Jung would improve Philadelphia’s options at third base, but it would immediately create another question at second.

That is where a reunion with Arraez enters the discussion.

The three-time batting champion reportedly hit .278 during his time with Philadelphia after arriving in the 2026 season. His campaign also ended with an ankle sprain that kept him off the postseason roster.

Those circumstances make it difficult to draw sweeping conclusions about his fit with the Phillies.

Arraez’s ability to put the ball in play remains an obvious attraction. He could provide a different offensive dimension from the power hitters around him, potentially helping Philadelphia string together rallies rather than relying exclusively on home runs.

But there is a difference between making contact and consistently producing value.

The Phillies would need to determine whether Arraez’s overall offensive contribution, defensive limitations, baserunning, and contract expectations justify bringing him back.

His batting average alone should not settle the debate. Philadelphia must consider on-base percentage, slugging, defensive range, lineup flexibility, and how his profile fits into the team’s postseason strategy.

There is also a financial question. If Arraez receives a contract that limits Philadelphia’s ability to improve elsewhere, the reunion could undermine the flexibility the organization is trying to create.

The ideal outcome would be adding Jung without paying too much for Arraez or sacrificing the opportunity to strengthen other areas of the roster.

WOULD TRADING STOTT BE A MISTAKE?

This is the biggest question facing Philadelphia in this hypothetical scenario.

Stott has qualities that contenders need. He can contribute defensively, run the bases, and provide versatility in the infield. Moving him would mean giving up a player who understands the organization and has experience in high-pressure situations.

Those contributions matter, especially during the postseason, when a single defensive mistake or an extra base taken by an opponent can change a game.

At the same time, the Phillies cannot let familiarity prevent them from pursuing a meaningful upgrade.

If the front office believes Jung can provide substantially better offense at third base while remaining a reliable defender, it should at least investigate the possibility.

The key is the price.

Trading Stott and a prospect for Jung would be a significant commitment. Before accepting that cost, Philadelphia would need confidence that Jung’s production is sustainable and that the resulting roster would be stronger overall.

The club must also consider whether a different trade target could provide similar offensive benefits without requiring Stott to leave.

A good trade does not simply improve one position. It improves the roster as a whole.

THE BIGGEST RISK IS ASSUMING ARRAEZ WILL SOLVE EVERYTHING

The proposed plan depends on two major transactions working together: Stott would need to bring back Jung, and Arraez would need to return as the new second baseman.

That is a lot of uncertainty to introduce into one part of the roster.

If the Phillies trade Stott before securing a dependable replacement at second base, they could find themselves negotiating from a weaker position. If Arraez signs elsewhere or demands more money than Philadelphia is willing to spend, the team would have to identify another solution.

That could mean entering the season with an infield that looks different but is not necessarily better.

Dombrowski should therefore approach the idea as a roster-building exercise rather than a simple player swap.

The front office should identify its preferred options at both positions, establish a reasonable financial limit, and determine how much prospect capital it can afford to surrender.

Philadelphia should also avoid treating Jung and Arraez as the only available answers. A broader search could uncover a better defensive fit, a more powerful right-handed bat, or a less expensive alternative.

WHAT THIS COULD MEAN FOR THE PHILLIES’ 2027 WORLD SERIES HOPES

Philadelphia’s biggest challenge is building an offense that can survive the different demands of a long regular season and a short postseason series.

A lineup can score heavily during the regular season and still struggle when facing elite starting pitching, high-leverage relievers, and managers who carefully exploit matchup weaknesses.

Adding a productive right-handed hitter could make the Phillies less predictable. Jung could help balance a lineup built around left-handed power, while Arraez could offer a different approach at the plate if the club decides to pursue him.

However, the Phillies must not sacrifice too much defense or become overly dependent on a small group of hitters.

The postseason has a way of exposing weaknesses that are easier to hide during the regular season. Philadelphia needs players who can contribute when the home runs are not coming, whether through quality at-bats, defensive reliability, baserunning, or timely contact.

That is why the Stott proposal deserves discussion but should not be treated as an obvious solution.

If the Phillies can upgrade third base, maintain adequate defense at second, and add a dependable right-handed bat without damaging their financial flexibility, the offseason could produce a stronger roster.

If they simply exchange one problem for another, the move could leave them no closer to a championship.

FINAL VERDICT: DAVE DOMBROWSKI SHOULD EXPLORE THE IDEA, NOT RUSH INTO IT

Trading Bryson Stott for Josh Jung is an interesting hypothetical that addresses a real question about Philadelphia’s infield.

Jung’s reported 2026 production and success against left-handed pitching make him an appealing target. Stott could offer Texas a proven major-league second baseman with athleticism and defensive value.

A potential reunion with Luis Arraez would then give Philadelphia another route to filling second base, although his overall value and financial demands would need careful evaluation.

Still, the Phillies should not move Stott simply because they need a right-handed bat.

The organization must be certain that Jung is a meaningful upgrade, that the Rangers would accept a reasonable return, and that a reliable second-base solution would remain available. It must also weigh the prospect cost and the effect on the rest of the roster.
