It’s no secret that Tony Allen is Memphis Grizzlies royalty. The former “First Team All-Defense” selection was in offense mode, Tuesday, helping the team dish out a new blacktop basketball court to Fox Meadows Elementary.
Allen was participating in the Grizzlies “Raise the Rim” event. He, alongside current player GG Jackson and coach Taylor Jenkins, played with students at the school to break in the new court.
But it’s on one court near and dear to Allen’s heart, FedExForum, where his jersey will hang in the coming months. Allen recently announced that the franchise plans to retire his number nine jersey.
The former forward and member of the “Core Four” played seven seasons for the Grizzlies, six of which ended in a playoff run.
Allen was a six-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection. Two members of the “Core Four,” Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol have already had their jerseys retired, now Allen’s number nine will join them.
“It was flattering, it was humbling. I was excited. A lot of things come to mind but for the most part, the Grizzlies always had my back. I’m a Grizzly for life,” Allen said. “Just knowing that the number nine will never be worn again, it’s basically a dream come true.”
The Core Four were a critical part of the Grit and Grind era of Memphis Basketball, culminating in a Western Conference Finals appearance in 2014. Forward Zach Randolph had his jersey retired in 2021, while Marc Gasol joined him in 2024. Allen is excited to join his teammates in the rafters.
“Those are my brothers, Big Spain, Z-Bo. The hard work, the blood, sweat and tears that we put in and that’s a sign of letting it be known it paid off,” Allen said.
The retirement ceremony date will be announced at a time to be determined.
