Angel Reese and Rhyne Howard Face Olympic Backlash as Calls to Ban Team USA Stars From 2028 Games Grow

A growing controversy surrounding the WNBA has sparked a heated debate about patriotism, personal expression, and who deserves the opportunity to represent the United States on the international stage. Atlanta Dream stars Angel Reese and Rhyne Howard have become part of that discussion after critics called for players who left the court before the national anthem during the WNBA Finals to be excluded from future Olympic teams.

The debate has intensified following the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries players’ absence from the court during the national anthem before the opening games of the 2026 WNBA Finals. Critics argue that athletes representing the United States should demonstrate respect for the country, while others believe a team’s pregame routine should not automatically determine a player’s international basketball future.

Jaime Lardis is among the commentators whose criticism has circulated online, with the image accompanying the controversy demanding that Reese and Howard be banned from representing Team USA at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics if they cannot show respect for America.

But there is an important distinction between a commentator’s demand and an official sporting decision: there has been no confirmed announcement that Reese or Howard has been banned from Olympic consideration.

The controversy raises difficult questions about national representation, athlete conduct, and whether a player’s actions away from competition should outweigh their basketball ability when national-team selections are made.

WHY ANGEL REESE AND RHYNE HOWARD ARE AT THE CENTER OF THE CONTROVERSY

Reese and Howard have become two of the Atlanta Dream’s most recognizable players, and both earned places on the United States’ roster for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Their selections were significant milestones for the franchise. The Dream announced that they became the first two Atlanta players to represent the United States together at a five-on-five Women’s World Cup or Olympic Games.

However, their connection to Team USA has also placed them under greater scrutiny as the national anthem controversy grows.

During the first two games of the 2026 WNBA Finals, players from Atlanta and Golden State were not on the court while the anthem was performed. The decision drew criticism from people who believe athletes should remain present for the ceremony, particularly when those athletes aspire to represent their country internationally.

For critics, the issue is about consistency. They question whether players can treat the anthem as optional during professional competition while viewing a place on the national team as an honor.

Supporters of the players may see the situation differently, arguing that a pregame routine does not necessarily establish someone’s feelings about the country or their willingness to represent it.

That disagreement has turned what might otherwise have been a brief discussion about a game-day routine into a much larger debate.

CALLS TO BAN THE PLAYERS FROM THE 2028 OLYMPICS ARE GAINING ATTENTION

The controversy has extended beyond ordinary fan discussions.

Riley Gaines has argued publicly that players who deliberately avoid the national anthem should face consequences when seeking to represent the United States internationally. Former Georgia state representative Vernon Jones has also called for players involved in the controversy to be deemed ineligible for the U.S. women’s Olympic basketball team.

These positions reflect a belief that representing the country comes with responsibilities beyond athletic performance.

The argument is straightforward: wearing a national-team jersey is a privilege, and athletes should be expected to demonstrate respect for the country they represent.

However, critics of a proposed ban can reasonably ask whether a player’s absence during an anthem is sufficient grounds to exclude that person from national-team selection.

There is also a practical distinction between public pressure and formal eligibility rules.

Neither a commentator nor a politician can independently impose a ban on a player selected for Team USA. Any actual restriction would have to come through the relevant sporting authorities and their applicable rules.

At present, the public calls for exclusion should not be confused with an official decision concerning Reese’s or Howard’s Olympic future.

ANGEL REESE HAS ALREADY SHOWN WHAT SHE CAN BRING TO TEAM USA

Whatever fans think about the anthem controversy, Reese’s basketball contributions remain relevant to any discussion about her international future.

The Atlanta forward has built her reputation around rebounding, physical play, second-chance opportunities, and relentless effort around the basket.

Those qualities can be valuable in international competition, where teams must find ways to win possessions and generate opportunities against talented opponents.

Reese also has experience representing the United States at different levels of basketball. Her selection to the 2026 senior national team gave her another opportunity to demonstrate her abilities against international competition.

That experience does not guarantee she will make the 2028 Olympic roster. National-team selection depends on multiple factors, including performance, health, team needs, competition for roster places, and the decisions of the people responsible for selecting the squad.

Nevertheless, any serious evaluation of Reese as a basketball player should examine her on-court contributions rather than reducing her entire career to a single controversy.

The question is whether the selection process should focus exclusively on basketball and established eligibility requirements or also consider expectations surrounding public representation of the country.

That is the central issue driving the debate.

RHYNE HOWARD’S OLYMPIC AMBITIONS ARE ALSO UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

Howard’s situation deserves separate consideration rather than being treated as identical to Reese’s in every respect.

The Dream guard has established herself as an accomplished scorer and perimeter threat. She has also developed an extensive history with USA Basketball, including success in international competitions before her senior World Cup selection.

According to the Dream’s announcement, Howard had already earned multiple gold medals in junior and other USA Basketball competitions before joining the 2026 senior World Cup roster.

Her shooting, ability to create offense, and international experience could all be relevant when selectors evaluate future national-team options.

As with Reese, however, past selection is not a guarantee of a place at the Los Angeles Olympics.

Howard will need to remain competitive, healthy, and capable of meeting the team’s needs. The United States has a deep pool of talented guards and wings, and competition for Olympic roster positions is expected to be intense.

The current controversy could generate additional public scrutiny, but there is no verified basis for declaring that Howard has already lost her chance to represent the country.

Her Olympic prospects should be discussed as an open question, not as a settled outcome.

SHOULD PATRIOTISM BE A REQUIREMENT FOR REPRESENTING TEAM USA?

This is where the controversy becomes more complicated than a simple argument about two basketball players.

Supporters of the proposed ban believe national-team athletes have a special responsibility because they compete under the American flag. From this perspective, showing respect during the national anthem is a reasonable expectation for anyone who wants to represent the country.

Others argue that respect for a country cannot be accurately measured through one pregame action. They may believe that an athlete’s commitment should be judged through their conduct, professionalism, and performance rather than assumptions about their motives.

There is also a distinction between personal criticism and institutional punishment.

Fans are entitled to disagree with players’ decisions, express disappointment, or argue that certain actions conflict with their understanding of national representation. But imposing a formal sporting consequence is a different matter and requires an established basis for doing so.

The debate becomes especially sensitive when an individual’s motives are inferred without a clear explanation from the person involved.

An absence during the anthem does not, by itself, establish everything a player believes about America. Similarly, representing the country in an international tournament does not mean an athlete must be immune from criticism.

A balanced discussion should allow both criticism and disagreement without presenting assumptions as established facts.

COULD THE CONTROVERSY AFFECT THE 2028 OLYMPIC SELECTION PROCESS?

The Los Angeles Olympics will present Team USA with an important challenge: assembling a roster capable of competing for another gold medal while navigating intense public expectations.

The selection process will involve decisions about talent, experience, health, positional balance, and the team’s overall needs.

Public controversy can influence how athletes are discussed, but it does not automatically establish a formal selection criterion.

Unless the relevant authorities announce a specific policy addressing anthem-related conduct, it would be premature to claim that Reese or Howard will be excluded for that reason.

It is also worth remembering that Olympic rosters are selected closer to the competition, meaning performances and circumstances can change substantially before 2028.

Reese could continue developing her offensive game and defensive impact. Howard could strengthen her position through scoring, playmaking, and consistent performances. Other players will also compete for limited roster spots.

The strongest prediction is that both players’ basketball abilities will remain important to their prospects, while the current debate may continue to influence public discussion around national-team representation.

Whether it changes any official selection decision remains unknown.

THE WNBA MUST NAVIGATE A DEBATE BIGGER THAN BASKETBALL

The controversy presents a challenge for the WNBA because it touches on several issues at once: league traditions, team routines, athlete expression, national pride, and the expectations of fans.

The league’s response, if it issues further clarification, could help explain what it expects from teams during the national anthem and how its rules should be understood.

At the same time, the national-team selection process is distinct from the WNBA’s day-to-day operations. A dispute over a professional league’s pregame routine does not automatically determine who is eligible to play for the United States internationally.

Clarity matters because confusion can encourage exaggerated claims about players being banned or disciplined when no such official decision has been announced.

The league and relevant basketball authorities would be better served by communicating their rules clearly rather than allowing speculation to fill the gaps.

For fans, the controversy also presents a choice: debate the players’ actions on their merits or assume that every disagreement must lead to the most severe possible consequence.

Those are not the same thing.

FINAL VERDICT: THE OLYMPIC BAN DEMAND IS AN OPINION, NOT A DECISION

Angel Reese and Rhyne Howard have found themselves at the center of an increasingly heated debate about patriotism and the responsibilities of athletes who represent the United States.

Their absence from the court during the national anthem before the opening games of the 2026 WNBA Finals has prompted calls from critics to exclude players involved in the practice from future Olympic teams. The criticism reflects genuine disagreement about what national representation should require.

But a demand for a ban is not an official ban.

Reese and Howard earned places on the 2026 USA Basketball Women’s World Cup roster, and their potential participation in the 2028 Olympics will depend on future selection decisions and any applicable rules.

My view is that the discussion should distinguish between legitimate criticism and claims that go beyond the available evidence. Fans can expect athletes to show respect for the country and still recognize that formal eligibility decisions must be made by the organizations responsible for the national team.

Ultimately, the question is not simply whether Reese and Howard should be punished. It is whether a player’s conduct during an anthem should become a formal factor in national-team selection—and, if so, how that standard would be defined and applied consistently.

Until USA Basketball or another relevant authority announces an official policy or decision, the future remains open.

For now, the controversy is a public debate, not a confirmed Olympic disqualification.
