Portsmouth Boss Reveals Big Spendings Bid In The Summer Transfer Window

John Mousinho believes Pompey had to resist making ‘rash’ transfer decisions this season in their efforts to establish themselves in the Championship.

But the Blues boss acknowledged there’s a spending balance to strike in the second tier moving forward, if his side are to retain their place at the level this term.

Mousinho has this week been discussing the prospect of potentially being the beneficiary of a bigger kitty for transfer fees, if he can guide his side to survival.

Pompey’s current playing budget is among the lowest in the Championship despite it more than doubling this season, with resources pushed further in the January window.

The Blues shifted their recruitment policy to add loans who can immediately impact the team in the last window, while adding the likes of Hayden Matthews and Thomas Waddingham with an eye on the future.

Mousinho acknowledged the temptation to make more short-sighted calls which impact the here and now, but, along with sporting director Rich Hughes, has recognised the danger of hurting the football club while doing so.

He said: ‘If we are able to stabilise as a club at this level all of those conversations around adding to the budget, adding to the transfer pot, adding to Fratton Park and adding to the training ground become a lot more palatable and a lot more achievable.

‘Inevitably there will be more revenue in the football club and we will be able to build in the right way.

‘It’s the most important thing to build in the right way and not risk the football club at all. I guess since the Eisners took over from the supporters’ trust that’s been the number one remit, not to risk the club again.

‘It’s very, very similar for Rich and myself as well not to make rash short-term decisions which benefit us and harm the football club. I think if we get that right and the balance right that will be the way to go.’

Mousinho feels the club should make no apologies for operating in the broadly sustainable fashion we’ve seen since the Eisners have been at the club.

EFL Championship debts reach £1.6 billion

That’s at odds with what’s seen across the Championship as club debt, including soft loans from owners, hit £1.6bn, according to a report last year from finance experts Deloitte.

Mousinho added: ‘There’s a couple of things, there’s making sure what we’ve got with the current ownership is right.

‘This isn’t going to happen, but if the owners were to pull the financial plug tomorrow the club would be absolutely fine. That is all of the commitments the club has, roughly speaking, are matched up by revenue.

‘So it wouldn’t be a disaster, as it’s been for some in the past couple of years or here previously.

‘Then the spending on the training ground, spending on Fratton Park and spending on transfer fees. All of that extra money the Eisners put on top would be the money which would suffer.

‘It’s not going to happen, but it demonstrates where the club is on a financial footing.

‘If we manage to stabilise as a club at his level then all of the spending on adding to the budgets, transfers and the infrastructure are more palatable.’
