Just minutes after the Hornets dropped their fifth straight game at the hands of the Hawks, Shams Charania reported the team would be signing Isaiah Wong to a two-way deal.
Rod Boone corroborated that report and added the two-way guard Jared Rhoden was being waived to open the roster spot.
Wong was a second round pick of the Indiana Pacers last season and spent all season on a two-way contract with them. He wasn’t retained in the offseason and ended up with the Salt Lake City Stars of the G League. In eight games, he’s averaged 24.1 points per game while shooting 46.7% from the field and 42.1% from three. He’s had games of 31, 35, and 41 points in the young G League season.

Hornets fans are probably somewhat familiar with Wong given his decorated career in the ACC. The former Miami Hurricane was a two time ACC third teamer and made the first team and won player of the year as a senior in the 2022-23 season.

Wong gives the Hornets more depth in the back court with LaMelo Ball and Tre Mann each out a couple of weeks. We’ll see if he’s able to get some court time with the Hornets or if his acquisition was more an insurance move.
Rhoden had a very strong debut for the Swarm but has been out for the last week or so with a shoulder injury (even the Swarm aren’t immune from the Hornets injury bug). I don’t know the specifics of the injury, but apparently the team felt it needed to do something else with the two-way spot.
