West Brom are hoping Grady Diangana can return for them this weekend, as per a report by the Express & Star.
West Brom are back in Championship action following the current international break. They face an away trip to Fratton Park to face newly promoted Portsmouth as they look to keep their momentum going.
Diangana, 26, picked up a shoulder injury last month in their away clash against Stoke City at the Bet365 Stadium. That ruled him out of their fixture against Swansea City last time out as they ended up winning 1-0 courtesy of Jayson Molumby’s first-half goal.
In this latest update regarding his condition by the Express & Star, the Baggies will make checks on him this week before making a decision about whether to play him. Carlos Corberan’s side have made an impressive start to the new season and find themselves sat in 2nd place in the table behind Sunderland.
Having Diangana back for their game against Portsmouth would be a boost for West Brom.
He provides more competition and depth to their attacking department and something different on the wing.
The DR Congo international, who has one cap under his belt, has entered the final year of his contract at The Hawthorns.
The Midlands outfit risk losing him for free in June 2025 if they don’t tie him down to an extension in the meantime.
Diangana joined the Baggies back in 2019 on an initial loan deal before his transfer was made permanent.
He has made 169 appearances in all competitions for them to date and has chipped in with 22 goals and 19 assists to date.
Prior to his move to West Brom, he rose up through the academy ranks at West Ham and was a regular for the Premier League side at various different youth levels.
The ex-England youth international then played 22 games for the Hammers’ first-team as a youngster and scored twice before he was allowed to head out the exit door.
What now for West Brom?
Time will tell whether Diangana returns for the Baggies at Portsmouth. If not, their home match against Plymouth Argyle on 21st September may be a more realistic return date for him.
They won’t want to take any risks with him to make his issue any worse so will carefully monitor him over the coming days.
West Brom will be confident mood right now after their solid start. They haven’t lost in the league yet and are looking strong.
Corberan’s men made the play-offs last season but were beaten at the semi-finals stage over two legs by eventual winners Southampton as they look to make the top six once again this time around.
