The Philadelphia Phillies could have an intriguing pitching prospect developing outside the spotlight, and his remarkable journey is beginning to attract attention.

Ryan Dromboski was once simply a young Phillies fan hoping to build a future in baseball while earning a degree from the University of Pennsylvania. After going undrafted in 2024, he could easily have returned to college and pursued a career outside professional sports.

Instead, the Phillies gave him an opportunity, and he has been working to prove that he belongs in the organization’s long-term plans.

Now competing in the Arizona Fall League, Dromboski is using the opportunity to demonstrate that an undrafted player can still work his way toward the major leagues. His recent performances have been encouraging, and his story offers Philadelphia another reason to pay attention to its developing pitching talent.

Although he still has work to do before reaching Citizens Bank Park, the 23-year-old right-hander is showing why teams should never overlook a prospect simply because he was not selected in the draft.

FROM PHILLIES FAN TO PROFESSIONAL PITCHER

Dromboski’s story has an emotional connection that many Philadelphia supporters will appreciate.

The New Jersey native grew up following the Phillies and attended the unforgettable October 23, 2022, National League Championship Series game when Bryce Harper delivered his dramatic go-ahead three-run homer against the San Diego Padres.

At the time, Dromboski was a fan watching one of the defining moments of the Phillies’ recent postseason history.

Now he represents the same organization as a professional pitcher.

His path to the Phillies was not straightforward. After going undrafted in 2024, he expected to return to the University of Pennsylvania for his senior year. He had deliberately chosen Penn for its academic opportunities, knowing that baseball might not become a full-time career.

Dromboski ultimately signed with Philadelphia as an undrafted free agent and completed his communications degree.

That decision gave him the opportunity to pursue professional baseball without sacrificing the education he had worked to obtain.

For the Phillies, signing him was a relatively low-profile move that has developed into an interesting prospect story.

RYAN DROMBOSKI IS MAKING THE MOST OF HIS ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE OPPORTUNITY

The Arizona Fall League provides prospects with an opportunity to compete against talented players from across professional baseball.

For pitchers such as Dromboski, it offers valuable experience against hitters who are also trying to strengthen their cases for future promotions.

According to MLB’s report, Dromboski had allowed only one run across his first 10 2/3 innings in the Fall League entering his October 21 outing.

During that appearance, he threw 4 1/3 innings and allowed one run in Surprise’s 10-3 defeat against Glendale.

Opponents had hit just .158 against him across that early Fall League sample.

Those numbers are encouraging, particularly for a pitcher who is trying to establish himself within a major league organization’s farm system.

However, the Fall League is a relatively small sample of games, and strong early statistics do not guarantee future success. Dromboski will need to sustain his performance as opposing hitters become more familiar with his pitches and approach.

Even so, the early results give Philadelphia a promising reason to continue monitoring his development.

HIS PITCHING ARSENAL IS EVOLVING

One of the most interesting aspects of Dromboski’s development is the evolution of his pitch mix.

During his college career, he relied on a sinker and slider as important parts of his approach. Since entering professional baseball, he has added a cutter while continuing to develop his changeup.

The changeup reportedly offers approximately eight to nine miles per hour of separation from his fastball, giving him another way to disrupt a hitter’s timing.

That variety matters because professional hitters can punish pitchers who become predictable.

A sinker can help generate ground balls, a slider can create swings and misses, and a cutter can provide a different movement profile. A well-developed changeup can further complicate a hitter’s decisions.

The challenge is combining those pitches effectively while maintaining command.

Dromboski has already demonstrated that he can generate swings and misses. MLB reported that his 13.6% swinging-strike rate ranked third among Phillies minor leaguers who had thrown at least 80 innings.

That statistic suggests his stuff has the potential to miss bats, although he will need to pair that ability with consistent control and results.

If his expanded arsenal continues to develop, he could give the Phillies another pitching option worth following as he moves through the system.

HIS 2026 SEASON SHOWED BOTH PROMISE AND ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

Dromboski’s progress has not been completely smooth.

After recording a 2.69 ERA during his professional debut season, when he split time between starting and relief appearances with Clearwater and Jersey Shore, he earned a full-time rotation role in 2026.

His overall ERA increased to 5.56 during that campaign.

That figure is a reminder that his development remains a work in progress. The transition to a full-time starting role can bring new demands, including managing a lineup multiple times, maintaining effectiveness deeper into games and refining pitch sequencing.

However, MLB’s report noted that a difficult two-start stretch with Double-A Reading significantly affected his overall numbers.

That context matters when evaluating a young pitcher, but it does not erase the need for improvement.

Dromboski will need to demonstrate that he can deliver consistent performances over a longer stretch, particularly as he faces more experienced hitters at the upper levels of the minors.

His Arizona Fall League performance offers an opportunity to build on the encouraging elements of his game while addressing the weaknesses that appeared during the regular season.

For the Phillies, that combination of potential and unfinished development is precisely why continued evaluation matters.

COULD DROMBOSKI FOLLOW OTTO KEMP’S PATH TO PHILADELPHIA?

Dromboski is hoping to follow a path similar to that of Otto Kemp, another player who signed with the Phillies as an undrafted free agent and earned opportunities that helped advance his professional career.

The comparison provides an encouraging example, but every prospect’s development is different.

Making the jump from the minor leagues to Major League Baseball requires more than one strong tournament or a collection of impressive statistics.

Players must show they can perform consistently, adjust when opponents identify weaknesses and handle the increasingly difficult competition at higher levels.

Dromboski has already reached Double-A in his second professional season, a meaningful step in his development.

His current Fall League assignment gives him another platform to show that he can compete against talented opposition.

If he continues to improve his command, maintain his ability to generate swings and misses and produce consistent outings, he could strengthen his case for future opportunities within the Phillies organization.

But there is no guarantee that he will follow Kemp’s exact trajectory or reach Philadelphia’s major league roster on a particular timetable.

For now, his progress is encouraging rather than conclusive.

THE PHILLIES COULD BENEFIT FROM ANOTHER HOMEGROWN PITCHING OPTION

Philadelphia’s pursuit of sustained success depends on more than its major league stars.

Developing affordable, productive players through the farm system can help a club maintain flexibility while addressing its needs through trades and free agency.

Pitching depth is especially valuable because injuries, workload management and inconsistent performances can quickly test a team’s rotation and bullpen.

A prospect who develops into a reliable major league contributor can provide meaningful value, whether as a starter, reliever or organizational depth option.

Dromboski is not yet at that stage, but his progress illustrates why the Phillies continue investing in player development.

The organization does not need every prospect to become an All-Star. Finding players who can eventually fill useful roles can also make a difference over a long season.

If Dromboski improves his consistency and continues to miss bats, he could become another name worth tracking as Philadelphia evaluates its future pitching options.

The next challenge is turning encouraging minor league performances into sustained success at higher levels.

A PHILLIES FAN WHO KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT THE DREAM MEANS

Dromboski’s connection to Philadelphia gives his journey an added dimension.

For many professional athletes, reaching the major leagues is the ultimate goal. For someone who grew up supporting the team he now represents, making that breakthrough would carry a particularly personal significance.

He has already experienced the excitement of watching the Phillies compete in October as a fan.

Now he is working toward the possibility of contributing to the organization himself.

That journey also highlights an important reality of professional baseball: not every successful prospect follows the traditional route.

Some players are drafted early and quickly become highly ranked prospects. Others go undrafted, sign as free agents and gradually earn opportunities through their performance.

Dromboski belongs to the second group.

His academic achievements, professional progress and current Fall League performance demonstrate the value of taking advantage of opportunities when they arise.

Whether he eventually reaches the major leagues remains uncertain, but he has already moved considerably beyond the future he expected when the 2024 draft ended without his name being called.

WHAT COMES NEXT FOR RYAN DROMBOSKI?

The most important step is maintaining his progress beyond the Fall League.

Philadelphia will need to evaluate his command, pitch quality, durability and ability to adjust against increasingly advanced hitters.

His elevated 2026 ERA also means that a small run of strong Fall League outings should be viewed alongside his broader professional record rather than as proof that every concern has disappeared.

A successful offseason and continued development could put him in a stronger position heading into the next stage of his career.

The Phillies have reason to be encouraged by his ability to generate swings and misses and by his early Fall League results. But the organization will ultimately judge him on whether he can turn those qualities into consistent production.

For Dromboski, the objective is straightforward: keep competing, continue refining his arsenal and make it increasingly difficult for the organization to overlook him.

FINAL VERDICT: THE PHILLIES HAVE A PROSPECT WORTH WATCHING

Ryan Dromboski’s journey from Penn graduate and devoted Phillies fan to professional pitching prospect is an appealing story, but it is also a reminder of how much work remains between the minor leagues and the majors.

His early Arizona Fall League numbers have been impressive, his pitch mix is evolving and his swinging-strike rate suggests he has a potentially useful weapon against opposing hitters.

At the same time, his 2026 season showed that consistency remains an important area of development.

The Phillies have no reason to rush his progress, but they do have reasons to keep watching.

If Dromboski can sustain his command, continue generating swings and misses and produce more consistent results against advanced competition, he could strengthen his position within the organization’s pitching pipeline.

For a player who once watched Bryce Harper deliver a postseason moment from the stands, the prospect of eventually taking the mound for Philadelphia would be an extraordinary full-circle achievement.
