CELTIC FANS DEMAND ANSWERS AS SPFL LAUNCHES NEW TV RIGHTS BATTLE — IS SCOTTISH FOOTBALL FINALLY READY TO CASH IN?

Scottish football has reached a crucial moment in its commercial future, and Celtic supporters have every reason to pay attention.

The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has officially launched the bidding process for the next UK television rights deal covering Premiership matches from the 2029/30 season. With the current broadcasting agreements approaching their conclusion, the league has an opportunity to explore new partnerships, reconsider how many matches are shown live and potentially increase the money flowing into Scottish clubs.

However, there is a significant difference between opening negotiations and securing a major financial breakthrough. The SPFL has started the process, but the eventual value of the deal, the broadcasters involved and the number of matches available to watch live remain undecided.

For Celtic, the stakes are particularly high. As one of Scotland’s biggest clubs, the outcome could influence future broadcasting income, commercial opportunities and the league’s ability to compete for attention in an increasingly crowded football market.

The big question is whether Scottish football can turn its popularity into a broadcasting agreement that delivers meaningful financial growth.

SPFL OFFICIALLY OPENS THE DOOR TO A NEW TV DEAL

On October 20, 2026, the SPFL confirmed that it had issued an Invitation to Tender for live UK broadcasting rights to William Hill Premiership matches from the 2029/30 season.

Under the existing arrangements, Sky Sports can broadcast up to 60 Premiership matches per season, while Premier Sports has rights to show up to 22 top-flight games annually. The current agreements run through the end of the 2028/29 campaign.

One important development is the SPFL’s willingness to discuss different approaches to the number of matches broadcast live. Rather than automatically retaining the current structure, the league has invited interested broadcasters to discuss their preferences.

That flexibility could become an important part of the negotiations.

A broadcaster might see value in showing more matches, while another could favour a different combination of fixtures, scheduling arrangements and streaming options. The SPFL will need to assess those proposals against its financial objectives and the interests of its member clubs.

The separate Premier Sports agreement covering the Scottish League Cup is not affected by this tender and remains in place until at least the end of the 2030/31 season.

The process is now underway, but the SPFL has not yet announced the winning bidder or the final financial terms.

WHY THE NEXT TV DEAL MATTERS SO MUCH FOR CELTIC

Celtic operate in a football environment where revenue helps determine how much clubs can invest in players, wages, facilities and recruitment.

A stronger Premiership broadcasting agreement could increase the resources available across Scottish football, depending on the final terms and how the income is distributed.

For Celtic, additional league revenue could help support squad development and long-term planning. It could also benefit the wider competition by giving other clubs more resources to recruit players, improve their infrastructure and build stronger teams.

That second point matters.

Although Celtic would naturally want to maximise their own commercial income, a healthy league also needs competitive and financially sustainable opponents. Matches become more compelling when rival clubs can consistently challenge, develop talented players and create meaningful competition throughout the season.

A better TV deal could contribute to that wider objective.

However, supporters should not assume that an increase in the overall broadcasting contract would automatically translate into a dramatic financial windfall for Celtic. The amount each club receives would depend on the contract’s value, distribution arrangements and any additional costs associated with delivering the agreement.

The real measure of success will be how much sustainable value the new deal creates for Celtic and the rest of the league.

CAN THE SPFL FINALLY CLOSE THE GAP WITH BIGGER EUROPEAN LEAGUES?

This is where the negotiations become especially important.

Scottish football has passionate supporters, historic rivalries and clubs with established international followings. Celtic and Rangers, in particular, attract attention beyond Scotland because of their history, European participation and enormous fan interest.

Yet popularity alone does not guarantee broadcasting income comparable to that of Europe’s biggest leagues.

Television rights are shaped by several factors, including the size of the available audience, competition between broadcasters, the number of attractive matches, production costs and the commercial value of the viewing opportunities being offered.

The SPFL must therefore demonstrate why its product deserves greater investment.

The league has some obvious selling points: the intensity of the Old Firm rivalry, unpredictable title races, European ambitions and the atmosphere generated by supporters across Scotland.

The 2025/26 campaign also delivered record annual attendances across the SPFL, according to the league’s recent announcement. That provides an encouraging backdrop as officials approach the next broadcasting negotiations.

Still, stadium attendance and television audiences are different measures. The SPFL will need to show broadcasters that the league can attract viewers consistently, not only during the biggest derbies or title-deciding matches.

If the league can demonstrate strong demand and attract competing offers, its negotiating position could improve. Whether that produces a substantially larger deal remains to be seen.

MORE LIVE MATCHES COULD CHANGE THE WAY FANS WATCH SCOTTISH FOOTBALL

One of the most intriguing aspects of the new tender is the possibility of changing how many Premiership matches are broadcast live.

At present, Sky Sports and Premier Sports operate within the limits of their respective agreements. The next deal could give the SPFL an opportunity to consider a different number of televised fixtures or a revised arrangement involving broadcasters and streaming services.

More live coverage could make it easier for supporters to follow their teams when they cannot attend matches in person.

It could also help Scottish football reach viewers who currently struggle to watch certain fixtures legally through their existing subscriptions.

But there are potential drawbacks.

More televised matches can create scheduling challenges, particularly if fixtures are moved away from traditional kick-off times to accommodate broadcasting requirements. Clubs must also consider the impact on travelling supporters, families and local communities.

There is a commercial balance to strike between maximising television income and protecting the matchday experience.

For Celtic supporters, the ideal outcome would be greater access to matches without unnecessarily disrupting the atmosphere and traditions that make following the club special.

The number of televised games matters, but so does the way those games are scheduled and delivered.

COULD NEW STREAMING PLATFORMS ENTER THE BATTLE?

The next rights cycle could also give the SPFL an opportunity to consider a wider range of broadcasting partners.

Traditional sports broadcasters remain important, but digital platforms have changed how audiences consume live entertainment. Streaming services can offer flexible viewing options, while established sports networks bring experience in production, promotion and subscription-based coverage.

The SPFL’s willingness to discuss different proposals could encourage a broader conversation about how Premiership football should be distributed from 2029/30.

However, supporters should be cautious about assuming that a particular streaming company will enter the bidding or that a major technology platform is guaranteed to become involved. No winning broadcaster has been confirmed.

The league will need to assess any proposal based on its financial value, reliability, audience reach and ability to deliver matches consistently.

A headline-grabbing deal would mean little if it made watching football more complicated for supporters or failed to deliver the promised income.

The best arrangement would combine strong commercial returns with convenient access for fans.

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS TURNING REVENUE INTO REAL PROGRESS

Scottish football has made progress in increasing the money distributed to its clubs.

In figures published earlier in October 2026, the SPFL reported that distributions to member clubs had risen to £49.6 million, an increase of £7.6 million compared with the previous year. The organisation also reported group income of £58 million.

Those figures show why broadcasting and commercial partnerships matter. They provide an important source of funding for clubs throughout the Scottish professional game.

But the next rights deal should not be judged solely by the headline contract value.

Supporters will want to know whether clubs receive more money, whether the distribution model supports sustainable growth and whether the additional revenue helps Scottish football become more competitive.

For Celtic, the question will be how the club can benefit financially while continuing to compete domestically and in Europe.

For smaller Premiership clubs, additional revenue could help improve recruitment, facilities and financial stability.

For the league as a whole, the challenge is ensuring that commercial growth becomes lasting progress rather than a short-lived headline.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE SPFL SECURES A BIGGER DEAL?

A stronger broadcasting contract could create several opportunities.

First, it could increase the revenue available to distribute among clubs, depending on the final terms. That could help clubs plan their budgets with greater confidence.

Second, improved broadcasting exposure could introduce more viewers to Scottish football. Greater visibility may create opportunities for sponsorship, advertising and other commercial partnerships.

Third, a revised agreement could make matches easier to access, particularly if the final arrangement offers supporters more flexible viewing options.

However, none of these outcomes is guaranteed.

A larger deal would need to be structured carefully, and any increase in revenue would have to be considered alongside the costs, obligations and distribution arrangements attached to the contract.

The SPFL must also avoid sacrificing the matchday experience simply to increase the number of televised fixtures.

For Celtic, the most useful outcome would be one that strengthens the league’s financial position while preserving the appeal of attending matches and supporting the team in person.

CELTIC FANS HAVE REASON TO WATCH THE NEGOTIATIONS CLOSELY

Celtic supporters are accustomed to demanding high standards from their club, particularly when it comes to recruitment, European competition and commercial performance.

The next broadcasting agreement is not a deal Celtic can negotiate alone, but its outcome could still influence the environment in which the club operates.

A stronger league-wide agreement could help Scottish football improve its financial foundations. It could also create a more attractive product for supporters, sponsors and broadcasters.

Yet there are legitimate questions about how much value the SPFL can secure, how revenue will be shared and whether fans will receive better access to matches.

Those questions deserve answers as negotiations progress.

The SPFL has opened the bidding process, but the real test will come when the proposals are assessed and the final agreement is announced.

FINAL VERDICT: A MAJOR OPPORTUNITY, BUT NO GUARANTEE OF A FINANCIAL REVOLUTION

The SPFL’s decision to invite bids for Premiership broadcasting rights from 2029/30 marks an important stage in Scottish football’s commercial planning.

The willingness to discuss different numbers of live matches creates room for new ideas, while record attendances and recent growth in club distributions provide encouraging context.

For Celtic, the potential benefits include stronger league finances, greater exposure and opportunities for the Scottish game to build its audience.

But supporters should separate the opportunity from the outcome. The SPFL has not yet confirmed a new contract’s value, the successful broadcasters or the final number of matches that will be shown.

Scottish football now has a chance to make its case to the broadcasting market. Whether that opportunity leads to a transformative agreement will depend on the bids received, the terms negotiated and the benefits ultimately delivered to clubs and supporters.
