PHILLIES’ $93M FREE-AGENT DECISION COULD MAKE OR BREAK THEIR 2027 SEASON

The Philadelphia Phillies have reached the point of the offseason where difficult decisions are unavoidable.

After another disappointing postseason exit, the front office has to determine which pieces of the 2026 roster genuinely belong in the organization’s next championship push and which players should be allowed to walk.

That makes the Phillies’ group of impending free agents particularly interesting.

Alec Bohm, Luis Arraez, Edmundo Sosa, Adolis García, José Alvarado and Tim Mayza are among the names facing uncertain futures in Philadelphia. The group represents significant potential payroll flexibility, giving the Phillies an opportunity to reshape the roster rather than simply running the same core back for another season.

But there is an important question behind all of it:

If the Phillies can bring back only one of these players, who should be No. 1 on the priority list?

My answer is not necessarily the most obvious one.

ALEC BOHM HAS THE BIGGEST LONG-TERM QUESTION MARK

Bohm is probably the most complicated player on this list.

The former first-round pick remains a productive right-handed hitter, and his ability to drive in runs gives him legitimate value. Despite a difficult beginning to 2026, Bohm finished the season much stronger offensively.

From May 9 through the end of the regular season, he hit .274 with 14 home runs, 73 RBI and a .773 OPS over 120 games. He also delivered a dramatic home run in the Phillies’ Wild Card Series.

That second-half turnaround matters.

Bohm demonstrated that his disappointing start should not necessarily be viewed as a representation of his entire offensive ability.

The problem is what Philadelphia would be paying for — and where he would play.

Bohm spent time at third base before moving to first base following Philadelphia’s acquisition of Arraez. His defensive numbers at first were not particularly encouraging, with NBC Philadelphia noting a minus-11 Outs Above Average mark.

That creates a roster-construction problem.

If the Phillies retain Arraez at first base, keep Kyle Schwarber at designated hitter and continue with Bryson Stott in the infield, where exactly does Bohm fit?

That question becomes even more important if Bohm really approaches the kind of contract being discussed around the league.

A three-year deal worth approximately $20 million per season would mean roughly $60 million in guaranteed money.

For a player who provides valuable offense but doesn’t have an obvious defensive home, that is a significant commitment.

LUIS ARRAEZ MAY BE THE MOST UNIQUE BAT ON THE MARKET

If the question is strictly about offensive skill, Luis Arraez deserves serious consideration.

Arraez is unlike almost anyone else in baseball. His elite contact ability gives an offense something that cannot easily be replicated.

Philadelphia acquired him with the hope that his bat-to-ball skills could stabilize the lineup, and he eventually became an important part of the middle of the order.

However, his situation is complicated by the injury that kept him off Philadelphia’s Wild Card Series roster. MLB reported that Arraez suffered a sprained left ankle late in September and did not appear against Atlanta.

There is also a larger strategic question.

How much should the Phillies spend on a player whose greatest strength is getting on base and making contact when the organization already has substantial money committed to veteran offensive stars?

Arraez can absolutely help Philadelphia win games.

But the Phillies need to ask whether retaining him is the best use of their limited roster resources.

EDMUNDO SOSA COULD BE THE SLEEPER PRIORITY

This is where the conversation gets interesting.

Edmundo Sosa may not generate the headlines that Bohm or Arraez does, but he could be one of the most valuable players for Philadelphia to retain.

Sosa earned $4.4 million in 2026 after the Phillies avoided arbitration with him.

He enters free agency after a season in which he hit .247 with nine home runs, 44 RBI and a .712 OPS.

Those numbers aren’t spectacular.

But evaluating Sosa purely through offensive statistics misses the bigger picture.

His defensive versatility and ability to move around the infield provide Philadelphia with something every contender needs: flexibility.

And that flexibility could become extremely valuable if the Phillies make larger changes elsewhere.

If Sosa’s market lands around the $8 million-per-year range, as some projections suggest, Philadelphia should at least explore the possibility of keeping him.

At that price, the Phillies could be buying versatility without making the type of massive financial commitment required to retain Bohm.

ADOLIS GARCÍA IS A BIGGER RISK

Adolis García represents a completely different decision.

Philadelphia added García hoping that he could provide power and defensive ability in the outfield.

The defensive component remains attractive.

The offensive production, however, became a major concern.

García’s 2026 season was shortened by a shoulder injury, and before he was sidelined, he struggled badly at the plate. One report noted that he had an 84-strikeout total in 259 plate appearances and a 61 OPS+.

That makes a significant reunion difficult to justify unless the financial terms are favorable.

The Phillies need outfield help.

But that does not mean they need to overpay for a player coming off a season in which his bat became a liability.

JOSÉ ALVARADO IS A TOUGH CALL

José Alvarado is another player whose history with Philadelphia makes this decision more complicated.

At his best, Alvarado can be a dominant late-inning weapon.

But the Phillies cannot evaluate him entirely based on what he has done at his peak.

His 2026 season was a difficult one, with a 5.86 ERA and -0.4 bWAR according to one recent assessment.

That creates a significant question for the front office.

Does Philadelphia believe Alvarado can return to being the dominant reliever fans saw during his better seasons?

If the answer is yes, a short-term rebound contract could make sense.

If the organization has doubts, this may be an opportunity to redirect that money toward a more reliable bullpen option.

TIM MAYZA SHOULD NOT BE THE TOP PRIORITY

Mayza is probably the easiest player on this list to separate from the top tier of offseason priorities.

That doesn’t mean Philadelphia should ignore him.

Left-handed relief remains valuable, and Mayza could potentially provide useful depth at the right price.

But when the Phillies are deciding where to allocate their biggest resources, there are more important questions to answer first.

The organization needs to determine its offensive identity, defensive alignment and bullpen structure before worrying about filling every secondary role.

SO WHO SHOULD BE PHILADELPHIA’S NO. 1 PRIORITY?

Here is my ranking:

1. Edmundo Sosa

2. Luis Arraez

3. Alec Bohm

4. José Alvarado

5. Adolis García

6. Tim Mayza

That ranking may surprise some Phillies fans.

Bohm is the better offensive player than Sosa, and Arraez is arguably the more accomplished hitter.

But offseason roster construction isn’t about simply keeping the most talented players.

It’s about maximizing the entire roster.

Sosa potentially gives Philadelphia the best combination of affordability, versatility and roster flexibility.

If the Phillies can bring him back without committing an excessive amount of money, that is the type of move that could prove extremely valuable over a full 162-game season.

WHY BOHM COULD STILL JUMP TO NO. 1

There is, however, a strong argument for making Bohm the priority.

Right-handed run producers are difficult to find, and Philadelphia already knows exactly what Bohm can provide.

He has also shown the ability to bounce back from adversity.

His second-half performance in 2026 should not be ignored simply because his overall statistics weren’t overwhelming. The Phillies saw a much more productive version of Bohm down the stretch, and his postseason home run only strengthened the argument that he remains capable of producing in important moments.

If Philadelphia believes Bohm can consistently produce at that level, three years at approximately $20 million per season becomes easier to understand.

The problem remains the defensive fit.

The Phillies shouldn’t sign Bohm to a major contract and figure out where to play him afterward.

They need to solve the roster puzzle first.

THE PHILLIES SHOULD NOT SPEND JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE MONEY

This may ultimately be the most important point.

Having money come off the books does not mean Philadelphia has to immediately replace every dollar.

The Phillies have an opportunity to become more flexible.

Instead of simply retaining the same group, Dave Dombrowski and the front office can identify weaknesses and attack them.

That could mean allowing several free agents to leave while pursuing players who better fit the roster.

The goal shouldn’t be:

“How many of our free agents can we bring back?”

It should be:

“Which players give us the best chance to win the World Series in 2027?”

That distinction could determine whether Philadelphia simply remains competitive or actually improves.

PHILADELPHIA NEEDS A DIFFERENT APPROACH AFTER ANOTHER EARLY EXIT

The Phillies have built an expensive veteran core capable of winning a lot of regular-season games.

But another early postseason exit has intensified questions about whether the current roster is constructed properly for October.

That doesn’t mean the organization needs to tear everything down.

Far from it.

Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler and other established pieces give Philadelphia a foundation that many teams would love to have.

But the supporting cast needs to be evaluated ruthlessly.

The free-agent decisions are part of that process.

The Phillies shouldn’t be sentimental.

They shouldn’t retain a player simply because he has been popular.

And they shouldn’t allow a player to leave simply because he had a disappointing season.

Every decision should be based on one question:

Does this player make the Phillies better in 2027?

MY FINAL PREDICTION

I would expect Philadelphia to seriously explore bringing back Sosa while being much more selective with the other free agents.

Bohm is the biggest decision because his offensive value and contract demands could force the Phillies to make larger changes elsewhere.

Arraez is fascinating because his unique hitting ability could make him extremely difficult to replace, but his defensive limitations and roster fit have to be considered.

García and Alvarado feel more like potential value plays rather than players Philadelphia should aggressively pursue.

Mayza could return if the price is right.

But if the Phillies can bring back only one?

I’d make Edmundo Sosa the priority.

Not because he’s the biggest star.

Because he may be the player who gives the Phillies the most flexibility while allowing the front office to spend its biggest dollars addressing more pressing weaknesses.

And if Philadelphia decides that Bohm’s bat is too valuable to lose, then the organization needs to be prepared to make significant changes elsewhere to create room for him.

The Phillies don’t need to win the offseason.

They need to build a roster that finally gives this expensive core a better chance of finishing the job in October.
