Ipswich Town plot transfer move for 33-year-old England international amid clutch clubs interest

Ipswich Town are reportedly amongst a clutch of clubs monitoring the situation of Callum Wilson, who could become a free agent for the second time in six months amid developments at his current employers, West Ham United.

That is according to TWTD, with Kieran McKenna looking to add further depth to his attacking department in the current winter transfer window.

The Tractor Boys have hit their straps in the Championship in recent weeks, and they are only two points behind second-placed Middlesbrough after their fixture with Portsmouth at Fratton Park was postponed on January 4th.

Town underwent a rebuild in the previous transfer window following their immediate relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season, but were still fancied, by many, to be in the promotion conversation due to the fact they still have a number of high-quality and experienced second tier campaigners throughout McKenna’s squad.

Indeed, the Suffolk side also broke the Championship’s transfer record for an incoming when Norwegian winger, Sindre Walle Egeli, moved to Portman Road for £17.5m from Danish Superliga outfit, FC Nordsjælland.

Ipswich did lose the services of star forward Liam Delap to Chelsea, last summer, but replaced the 22-year-old with the acquisitions of Chuba Akpom and Ivan Azon, who linked up with the pre-existing option of George Hirst.

However, it appears the Tractor Boys are in the market for further creative and attacking reinforcements, having already been linked with a handful of transfer moves for players at differing periods within their respective careers.

Wilson is one of those who would provide a wealth of Championship and Premier League experience, with Town looking to take advantage of his current uncertainty at the London Stadium under Nuno Espírito Santo.

Ipswich Town register Callum Wilson transfer interest amid West Ham contract uncertainty

As previously mentioned, the nine-time England international is facing an extremely uncertain future in East London, just months after the Hammers acquired his services on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Newcastle United.

The 33-year-old moved to the Irons in Graham Potter’s second and final transfer window at the London Stadium ahead of his dismissal back in September, with Nuno subsequently taking charge after his own controversial departure from Nottingham Forest.

It has been a dismal campaign for the Hammers, though, and they are in grave danger of returning to the Championship for the first time since the 2011/12 campaign, where they defeated Blackpool in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium under Sam Allardyce.

At present, Nuno’s men are 18th in the Premier League after 21 games played, and are seven points behind Forest after a damaging defeat to the Reds last Tuesday.

In the lead-up to that particular encounter, though, it was widely reported that the Hammers hierarchy were in talks with Wilson over an early termination of his contract.

The Coventry-born forward signed a one-year deal at the London Stadium on August 2nd, but could potentially be braced for an early exit.

West Ham, of course, completed the signings of two forwards in the first week of the current window, with Pablo Felipe joining from Gil Vicente for £21.8m, whilst Taty Castellanos’ move from Lazio saw them part with a further £26m.

Wilson has made 18 appearances for the Claret and Blue outfit since his free transfer, scoring on four occasions.

However, he was omitted from last Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Sean Dyche’s side, whilst also not making the squad for the FA Cup clash against Queens Park Rangers on Sunday afternoon.

With it being widely reported that Town have missed out on the potential signing of Patrick Bamford, who has now signed a further 18-month contract with Sheffield United, it has emerged that Wilson is now a target for McKenna amongst other options.

Another name Town have been linked with is Birmingham City’s Lyndon Dykes, with it being reported that a loan move could be in the offing for the 48-time Scotland international.

Callum Wilson would be a shrewd addition to Ipswich Town’s frontline

If all the cards for this potential deal were to fall, then Wilson would be a shrewd addition to Town’s frontline, even on a short-term basis.

The striker, of course, has experience of promotion from this level, scoring 20 times and posting a further 13 assists when AFC Bournemouth were crowned champions under Eddie Howe in 2014/15.

Since then, he has gone on to feature in the UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup, and has still showcased a goalscoring touch in less than 20 outings for West Ham.

However, it remains to be seen if Town are to be successful in their pursuit, as Wilson certainly isn’t short of suitors.
