ADOLIS GARCIA LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER BAD DAVE DOMBROWSKI BET — AND THE PHILLIES STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS

The Philadelphia Phillies may have another offseason decision worth revisiting, and this one could become an uncomfortable reminder of a recurring problem under president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.

The Adolis García experiment simply has not produced the offensive results the Phillies needed.

García entered Philadelphia with the reputation of being a powerful right-handed bat who could also provide quality defense. That combination made the $10 million investment understandable on paper.

But the problem is that the bat never arrived.

According to the numbers cited in the original criticism, García hit just .195 in 2026 while striking out 33% of the time. That performance becomes even more concerning when viewed alongside his .227 batting average and 25% strikeout rate in 2025.

That isn’t simply one bad month.

It’s a trend.

And for a Phillies lineup already carrying plenty of swing-and-miss concerns, adding another high-strikeout hitter without getting the expected offensive production could prove to be one of Dombrowski’s more questionable moves.

THE NUMBERS MAKE THE GARCIA MOVE HARD TO DEFEND

The biggest issue isn’t that García struggled.

Every player struggles.

The issue is that the warning signs were already there.

A .227 batting average in 2025 accompanied by a 25% strikeout rate should have prompted Philadelphia to ask some difficult questions before committing $10 million.

Instead, the Phillies apparently believed they could unlock something better.

Then García’s 2026 numbers became even worse.

A .195 average combined with a 33% strikeout rate is an extremely difficult offensive profile to carry, particularly for a team with championship expectations.

A hitter can survive a low batting average if he provides elite power, gets on base consistently or creates enough offensive value in other ways.

But if the result is frequent strikeouts without enough production to compensate, the margin for error becomes extremely small.

“OUR COACHES CAN FIX HIS SWING” IS NOW UNDER THE MICROSCOPE

One of the most interesting parts of this situation is the reported philosophy behind the signing.

Dombrowski reportedly believed the Phillies’ coaching staff could help fix García’s swing.

That sounds reasonable in theory.

Organizations are constantly trying to improve players mechanically. The Phillies have invested heavily in their hitting infrastructure, and there is nothing inherently wrong with believing a struggling veteran can be helped.

But there is a major difference between identifying a fixable flaw and assuming a player will suddenly become a fundamentally different hitter.

That’s where hindsight makes this move particularly uncomfortable.

If García’s underlying profile already showed significant swing-and-miss problems, Philadelphia needed to be confident that there was a realistic path to improvement.

Instead, the results suggest the Phillies may have underestimated how difficult that transformation would be.

GOOD DEFENSE DOESN’T COMPLETELY SOLVE THE PROBLEM

Defensive value matters.

That should not be ignored.

García’s defensive ability was one of the reasons the signing made sense in the first place. A player doesn’t have to hit .300 to be valuable if he provides elite defense, baserunning and enough offensive production.

But there is a breaking point.

If a player becomes an automatic out too frequently, the defensive contribution has to be exceptional enough to compensate.

That’s especially true on a roster built to win now.

Philadelphia doesn’t need players who merely have one useful skill.

The Phillies need players who can contribute in multiple ways during a postseason series.

A strong defensive player who strikes out one-third of the time while hitting below .200 creates a very difficult offensive problem for a lineup that is already susceptible to strikeouts.

THE BIGGER PROBLEM IS PHILADELPHIA’S SWING-AND-MISS PROFILE

This is why García’s struggles are bigger than García himself.

The Phillies already have hitters who can produce enormous power but also strike out at uncomfortable rates.

Adding another player with a 33% strikeout rate doesn’t necessarily diversify the lineup.

It can magnify the existing weakness.

The best lineups aren’t necessarily made up of players who never strike out. Modern baseball doesn’t work that way.

But championship-caliber offenses need balance.

You need power.

You need patience.

You need contact.

You need players who can move runners and extend innings.

And most importantly, you need enough reliable at-bats that opposing pitchers can’t simply attack the lineup with the same strategy over and over again.

García’s struggles raise questions about whether Philadelphia properly addressed that balance.

THE $10 MILLION QUESTION

Ten million dollars isn’t necessarily a franchise-changing amount of money for the Phillies.

But that’s not really the point.

The problem is opportunity cost.

Every $10 million commitment represents money that can’t be used elsewhere.

And Philadelphia still has needs.

The Phillies continue to need a legitimate right-handed bat, while the bullpen remains an area requiring attention.

That’s where this move becomes frustrating for fans.

If García isn’t providing the offensive production Philadelphia expected, the organization has essentially spent valuable resources without solving the larger roster problem.

That’s how a manageable mistake becomes a bigger offseason issue.

THIS IS WHERE THE “FIX THE BULLPEN” COMPARISON MATTERS

There is another part of the criticism that deserves attention.

Dombrowski has previously acquired veteran or reclamation-type pitchers with the expectation that the Phillies’ coaching staff could help them find another level.

Sometimes those gambles work.

Baseball executives have to take calculated risks.

But there is a difference between making one reclamation bet and repeatedly relying on the same philosophy without consistently solving the underlying roster need.

The bullpen is a perfect example.

If the organization keeps bringing in pitchers hoping to “fix” them rather than acquiring proven late-inning reliability, eventually the strategy has to be questioned.

The same principle applies to García.

At some point, Philadelphia needs to stop betting on what a player might become and start prioritizing what the player is most likely to provide.

THE PHILLIES STILL NEED THAT RIGHT-HANDED BAT

This may ultimately be the most important takeaway.

The García experiment doesn’t eliminate Philadelphia’s need for a right-handed hitter.

It makes the need even more obvious.

The Phillies need someone who can provide meaningful production against left-handed pitching, protect the middle of the lineup and give the offense another dependable option.

Ideally, that player should also bring a better contact profile than the current high-strikeout alternatives.

Philadelphia cannot simply continue stacking power hitters and hope everything works itself out.

At some point, roster construction has to become about complementing strengths and weaknesses.

THE BULLPEN PROBLEM IS STILL WAITING

Then there’s the bullpen.

No matter what happens with García, Philadelphia cannot enter another championship chase believing its relief corps will magically fix itself.

Bullpens are volatile, but the Phillies need dependable arms.

They need pitchers who can be trusted when a playoff game is decided in the sixth, seventh or eighth inning.

If Dombrowski spends heavily on another offensive addition while ignoring the bullpen, the criticism will only become louder.

This roster doesn’t need one splash.

It needs the right pieces.

DAVE DOMBROWSKI DESERVES CREDIT — BUT HE ALSO DESERVES CRITICISM

It is important not to turn this into an argument that Dombrowski is incapable of building a contender.

He has helped construct a Phillies team that has remained firmly in the championship conversation.

But that doesn’t make every transaction automatically successful.

Good executives make mistakes.

Great executives recognize them quickly.

That’s what Philadelphia fans should be watching now.

If García’s performance represents a failed experiment, the Phillies need to acknowledge it rather than continuing to force the original plan.

The worst move would be allowing the money already spent to influence future decisions.

WHAT SHOULD THE PHILLIES DO WITH GARCIA?

The answer depends on what the organization believes internally.

If Philadelphia’s analytics and coaching departments genuinely believe García can make meaningful mechanical adjustments, another opportunity could be justified.

But there needs to be evidence.

Not optimism.

Not reputation.

Not the belief that coaches can simply “fix” everything.

Evidence.

If the Phillies don’t see a realistic path toward improved contact and offensive production, they should be willing to move on rather than doubling down because of the original investment.

MY TAKE: THIS IS EXACTLY WHY THE PHILLIES NEED A DIFFERENT OFFSEASON APPROACH

The García situation should serve as a warning for Philadelphia.

The Phillies cannot afford to keep filling roster holes with players who need everything to go right.

They are too talented and too expensive for that.

The championship window demands certainty where certainty can reasonably be purchased.

That doesn’t mean abandoning every gamble. Baseball doesn’t work that way.

But when the team needs a right-handed bat and a quality bullpen, those positions should be addressed with players who have a demonstrated ability to fill those roles.

Philadelphia shouldn’t need another offseason of hoping someone suddenly becomes the player the organization envisioned.

THE GARCIA MOVE COULD BECOME A SYMBOL OF A BIGGER PHILLIES PROBLEM

Ultimately, Adolis García’s disappointing production isn’t going to determine whether the Phillies win another championship by itself.

But it does represent a larger question facing Dombrowski.

Are the Phillies building around what players have already proven they can do, or are they betting too heavily on what they hope those players can become?

That’s the question the front office has to answer.

The Phillies still need a right-handed bat.

They still need bullpen help.

And they need to make sure the next additions actually address those weaknesses rather than creating another project for the coaching staff.

García was supposed to help solve a problem.

Instead, his struggles may have created another one.

And if Dombrowski wants to push the Phillies back toward championship contention, this is one mistake he cannot afford to repeat.
