Nottingham Forest’s quest to sign a midfielder has taken a new turn, according to reports – with Middlesbrough rejecting their offer to sign Hayden Hackney on transfer deadline day morning.

The report by Sky Sports reporter, Keith Downie, states that Middlesbrough have rejected an offer this morning from Forest for their academy graduate.

Forest have been vying for a central midfielder in the latter stages of the transfer window, seeing their loan move for Inter Milan star Davide Frattesi fall through, whilst bids for Celtic star Arne Engels have been so far unsuccessful.

With that in mind, they’re now in the race to sign Hackey – though Middlesbrough have rejected a bid for their skipper.

It’s thought that they want him to stay and help lead the Riverside outfit to promotion in what would be a decade-long hiatus from the Premier League if they fail to reach the top-flight.

With 18 months left on his Middlesbrough contract, it’s a risky move though they will reap the rewards if promotion is achieved.
