Wrexham In Talks To Make Record Signing For Former Man City Star

Wrexham could be about to follow up the signing of Ryan Hardie with another impressive signing of a player with Championship experience.

Wrexham are gearing up for their toughest assignment yet under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney: the Championship.

Phil Parkinson continues to deliver the good on the pitch having steered Wrexham to a 2nd place finish in League One last season, securing a third-straight promotion in the process.

This summer, Wrexham have a £25million transfer budget, and Parkinson has already put £700,000 of that to use on signing Hardie from Plymouth Argyle.

Wrexham have confirmed the signing of Hardie from relegated Plymouth. He scored 22 goals across the Green Army’s two seasons in the top flight, and his arrival is a huge indication of what might be to come for Wrexham this summer.

It’s inevitable that Parkinson will target players with Championship experience and another one he is working hard to bring in is Tommy Doyle at Wolves.

The latest on Wrexham’s interest in Tommy Doyle at Wolves

Earlier in the summer, Wrexham were linked with a move for Doyle after the former Man City man has fallen somewhat out of favour with the Premier League club. He played 24 times in the Premier League last season but started just three games, failing to score and claiming just the one assist.

Doyle has been compared to Jobe Bellingham and he could be someone who Wrexham sign, and eventually make a huge profit on, as Sunderland have just done with Bellingham. And the 23-year-old Doyle is someone who Wrexham have already held talks to sign this summer, Wrexham Insider understands, with Parkinson wanting to sign the £3million-rated Doyle on a permanent deal.

Speaking to Wrexham Insider, our chief transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey added: “Tommy Doyle has a lot of interest and Wrexham are one of those, they like him a lot and is someone they are working on.”

3 reasons why Tommy Doyle would be a great signing for Wrexham

Tommy Doyle would be an investment

Parkinson urged Wrexham to sign Arthur Okonkwo last summer, viewing the young goalkeeper as an investment. The former Arsenal man has since prevailed and he’s surely seen his transfer value shoot up.

In years to come, Wrexham could sell Okonkwo for many millions. The same could be said of Doyle if he signs too: he had a great footballing upbringing with Man City and at 23, he remains young, and surely has a desire to go somewhere where he plays regularly and is the main man.

Tommy Doyle is a really versatile player

Throughout his short career, Doyle has operated in numerous midfield roles. He can play as a no.10 or a bit deeper as a no.8, or even as a no.6. Being likened to Bellingham tells us all we need to know about his style of play and the positions he can fill in midfield.

For Parkinson, who likes fluidity in his midfield and an ability to transition quickly, Doyle could be the perfect lynchpin to turn defence into attack, and his versatility would come in handy when Wrexham inevitably run into injuries during the long-haul Championship season.

Stat (Championship) Tommy Doyle’s record
Games 52
Goals 5
Assists 7
Mins-per-GA 277

Tommy Doyle would add Championship experience

Doyle has played for both Cardiff City and Sheffield United in the Championship. He’d add that Championship experience that Parkinson craves, and then some: Doyle has 51 Premier League appearances to his name and even one in the Champions League with Man City.

Despite being a younger player, Doyle boasts a good degree of experience and it’ll serve him well in his development over the next few years, if he lands at a team where he’s starting regularly.

On top of all of that, Wrexham’s club record transfer would be smashed if they sign the £3million-rated Doyle this summer.
