Saints striker Cyle Larin urges Southampton to keep climbing after huge win at Wrexham

STRIKER Cyle Larin wants Saints to keep climbing the Championship table after a 5-1 win over Wrexham saw them reclaim their place in the play-off.

Larin scored the third goal in North Wales as Saints blitzed play-off rivals Wrexham on the way to extending their unbeaten run to 16 games.

Tonda Eckert’s charges are now two points clear of Wrexham and could catch fifth-place Hull if they win their game in hand against second-place Ipswich Town.

Larin will not be satisfied with sixth-place at the end of the season, and has urged his teammates to push for an even better league finish.

“It was an amazing win. We showed who we are. We aren’t just a side that beat a Premier League team, we’ve come here and handled our business,” he said.

“Each guy knew what was at stake in this game – we know what is at stake in each game. We want to keep climbing and climbing up the table.

“It’s down to the hard work we put in. Yes, we scored five, but over the whole game, everyone was working hard, offensively and defensively.

“I love it. This is a great club with great guys. Everyone is working really well together. We just have to keep doing that, and we will keep climbing up.”

Larin has scored four goals in 10 Championship appearances since joining Saints on loan from La Liga club RCD Mallorca in the winter window.

This strike at Wrexham showed a different side of the Canadian international, who has primarily been used as a target forward.

Larin latched onto a loose pass from Lewis O’Brien on the halfway line before breaking forward at pace and slamming past Arthur Okonkwo.

“I’ve scored goals similar to this. Once I saw I could get the pass, I knew how fast I am, and I wasn’t going to stop. I went straight for it,” he added.

“I had nothing else on my mind other than scoring the goal. To have the fans right beside me was nice. I don’t think it was a long way to go.

“It looks long, but it’s not. You have one thing on your mind, and that’s to score.”
