They punished us' – Parkinson laments Wrexham mistakes after Southampton thumping

Well, Southampton fans, you aren’t dreaming.

Indeed, the Saints just keep winning in style, when the pressure is ramped up, with a famous 2-1 win over Arsenal in the FA Cup, now backed up by a thrashing of a promotion rival.

Southampton played Wrexham off the park in Wales, which is no easy feat, but Tonda Eckert’s men are just making every victory at the moment look like a breeze, as the South Coast side thrashed Phil Parkinson’s shellshocked hosts 5-1.

There were several exceptional performers at the Racehouse Ground, donning Southampton’s changed strip of yellow and blue, as the travelling Saints masses applauded their troops wholeheartedly at the final whistle.

Standout Southampton performers vs Wrexham

This article would turn into an essay if I listed off every single top-drawer Southampton performer, as every single player on the pitch played their role to perfection versus the Red Dragons.

The goals were spread out all over the team, as the likes of Flynn Downes, Cyle Larin, and Finn Azaz all firmed up their first-team spaces by bagging goals in Wales.

Azaz was particularly sharp, as the Leeds United-linked ace continues to put in performances that are of Premier League calibre.

Ross Stewart also played his role superbly, as a late impact substitute, with the instinctive Scotsman only needing 15 minutes of action to prod home Southampton’s game-killing fourth.

There is one Saints performer, who is yet to be named, that slipped completely under the radar at the Racehouse Ground, as he continues to deliver the goods for Eckert’s promotion hopefuls.

The Southampton star who slipped under the radar

Southampton fans watching on at the moment must love taking in this group of players, as every single one of them is playing out of their skin, to try and secure an instant return to the Premier League.

Kuryu Matsuki certainly caused the Wrexham defence all sorts of bother when he was reinstated into the starting XI, to keep up his impressive personal season, which continues to slip under the radar, next to the much-talked-about examples of Azaz and Leo Scienza.

The 22-year-old attacker is now up to four goals and one assist for the season, despite only making eight Championship starts this season, with Matsuki standing out against some of the very best in the demanding division.

The Japanese speedster would bag Southampton’s crucial second goal against Coventry City in March, to help Eckert and Co. sneak home to a 2-1 victory, and he was amongst the goals again, versus Wrexham, who have now fallen out of the playoffs, due to his team’s heroics.

Matsuki would smash home the opener for the South Coast outfit, on their travels to Wales, but he stood out, away from just his classy finish beating a frustrated Arthur Okonwko.

Come the end of the match, the ex-FC Tokyo attacker had also won a brave five duels for his team’s cause, as he further embodied the tenacity Southampton have become known for as a collective, as they hunt down promotion.

Once a fringe player at St. Mary’s, Matsuki has now become a key part of Eckert’s promotion-chasing machine, as he dreams of finally lining up for the Saints in the Premier League.
