Transfer Rumours: La Liga Club Eyeing Norwich City’s Winger

Spanish side Girona are targeting a swoop for Norwich City winger Borja Sainz, according to reports in his native country.

Sainz is the Championship’s top scorer with 15 goals, and that burst of goal-scoring form has created plenty of speculation surrounding his City future as he enters the final 18 months of his Carrow Road contract.

Clubs from the Premier League, Turkey and Spain have all been credited with an interest in the 23-year-old winger, and Fichajes are reporting that Girona are the latest to add Sainz’s name to their list of potential targets.

The report states that Norwich have slapped a price tag of ‘€20 to 25m’ on the winger’s head as they seek to retain his services in January. Sainz is currently serving a six-game suspension after admitting to a spitting charge during City’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland last month.

Galatasaray, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal have previously been cited among a growing list of admirers of the City winger, who joined the club from Turkish club Giresunspor on a free transfer in 2023.

Girona, who are part of the City Group empire, are hoping to add Sainz to their squad as they continue to build assets and improve their attacking positions in an attempt to sustain a season of La Liga progress.

The Catalan-based side currently sit seventh in the top-flight table and is chasing down Mallorca and Villarreal in the hunt for European football next season.

City’s soon-to-be majority shareholder Mark Attansio ruled out selling the Spanish winger in the winter transfer window after November’s AGM at Carrow Road.

“We don’t need to sell Borja in January. Frankly, we don’t need to sell them ever,” he said. “We can control what we can control, in regards to what happens to our players.

“Borja’s been great for us, right? I was meeting lots of people on this trip and (at Colney) there’s a chart for all the players and appearances they’ve made. Nobody in this club has made more appearances than Borja Sainz.

“I said to the people there, ‘Wow, that’s great because he’s working really hard. Does he ever say no when it comes to hard work?’ He is a great character, and if at some point he wants to move on then you look at that. But, you know, January would be a little a little too early for us, I think.”
