Angus Crichton set to leave Sydney Roosters and NRL to chase Wallabies World Cup dream - ABC News

In one of the most surprising cross-code moves in recent Australian sport, Sydney Roosters star Angus Crichton has announced he will step away from the NRL to pursue a long-held ambition: representing the Wallabies at a Rugby World Cup.

Crichton, 29, confirmed his decision on Tuesday, ending a decorated rugby league career that included premiership success with the Roosters, State of Origin appearances for New South Wales, and Kangaroos honours. The powerhouse edge forward will immediately begin his transition to rugby union, with the clear goal of forcing his way into Wallabies contention ahead of the next World Cup cycle.

“I’ve achieved more than I ever dreamed of in league,” Crichton said in a statement. “But rugby union was my first love, and the chance to wear the gold jersey at a World Cup is something I couldn’t let pass me by.”

Before becoming one of the NRL’s most destructive back-rowers, Crichton came through the ranks in union, representing Australia at schoolboy level and showing the athleticism and ball-running ability that later made him a star in league. His blend of size, speed, and skill has long had union observers speculating about how he might fare if he ever switched codes.

The Roosters released a statement thanking Crichton for his contribution to the club, describing him as a “model professional and a leader on and off the field.” Club officials acknowledged the decision was difficult but said they respected Crichton’s desire to chase a unique international goal.

From a Wallabies perspective, Crichton’s move comes at a fascinating time. Australian rugby is searching for powerful, athletic forwards who can bend the line and add punch out wide — an area where Crichton could make an immediate impact. While the transition from league to union is never straightforward, recent converts have shown it can be done successfully with the right preparation and coaching.

Rugby Australia is understood to be supportive of the switch, with discussions already underway regarding Super Rugby opportunities that would fast-track Crichton into the national setup. While no guarantees have been made, selectors are reportedly intrigued by the prospect of moulding the former NRL star into a Test-calibre blindside flanker or dynamic No. 8.

Not everyone is convinced the gamble will pay off. Critics point to the steep learning curve around breakdown work, set-piece involvement, and defensive structures unique to union. However, supporters argue Crichton’s professionalism, work ethic, and elite athletic base give him a genuine shot at making the leap.

For Crichton, the risk is clear — but so is the reward. Walking away from the security and stardom of the NRL is no small call, yet the lure of a World Cup represents a rare opportunity to redefine his sporting legacy.

“I know nothing is guaranteed,” he said. “But if I don’t take this chance now, I’ll always wonder what might have been.”

Whether Angus Crichton ultimately runs out in Wallabies gold or not, his bold decision has already added a new layer of intrigue to Australian rugby — and reminded fans that, sometimes, the biggest victories start with the bravest leaps.
