Sydney Roosters linked to shock move for NRL $2 million halfback in bold recruitment plan

The Sydney Roosters have once again found themselves at the centre of rugby league’s rumour mill, this time linked to a stunning long-term move for Nathan Cleary in what could become one of the most audacious recruitment plays in modern NRL history.

Reports emerging in recent days suggest the Roosters are exploring the possibility of luring Cleary away from the Penrith Panthers, potentially as part of a “package deal” that could also involve his father and current Panthers coach, Ivan Cleary. While the speculation remains unconfirmed, it has gained significant traction across media and league circles.

At the heart of the rumour is timing. Cleary is contracted until the end of 2027, but will be free to negotiate with rival clubs from November 1 this year, opening the door for discussions about a potential switch in 2028. This contractual window, combined with the Roosters’ history of landing marquee players, has fueled belief that the club could seriously test the market.

Cleary is widely regarded as one of the game’s elite playmakers, boasting multiple premierships and individual accolades. His leadership and composure have been central to Penrith’s dominance over recent seasons, making any potential move seismic for the competition.

For the Roosters, the reported interest reflects a broader strategy of long-term squad evolution. The club is facing a period of transition, with key players ageing, departing, or approaching contract crossroads. At the same time, pressure has mounted on coach Trent Robinson to maintain the team’s status as a premiership contender.

This context has led to speculation that the Roosters could be preparing for a significant reset—one that might include a high-profile recruitment drive headlined by Cleary. Some reports even suggest the move could hinge on the club’s performance this season, with underachievement potentially triggering a bold approach for both Nathan and Ivan Cleary.

However, major obstacles remain. Cleary’s deep ties to Penrith, where he has spent his entire NRL career under his father’s coaching, cannot be overlooked. There is also strong interest from overseas clubs, including lucrative offers from the English Super League, which may prove more appealing than a switch to a direct NRL rival.

Scepticism also surrounds the feasibility of the move. Salary cap constraints, the complexity of securing both player and coach, and the Panthers’ desire to retain their star halfback all present significant challenges. Even within fan communities, the rumour has been met with a mix of intrigue and disbelief, highlighting just how extraordinary such a transfer would be.

Still, the Roosters’ reputation as aggressive market players ensures the speculation will not fade quickly. Under the influence of powerful figures like chairman Nick Politis, the club has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to pursue big-name signings when opportunities arise.

For now, the Cleary-to-Roosters scenario remains firmly in the realm of possibility rather than certainty. But in a league where bold moves can redefine dynasties, even the suggestion of such a deal is enough to capture the imagination—and keep the NRL world watching closely.
