Stoke City have offered €3m for Austria Wien midfielder Abubakr Barry, according to Austrian news outlet Krone.
Stoke City are approaching another important summer transfer window after another disappointing Championship campaign. SCFC finished down in 17th, failing to come good on the potential they showed early on.
The struggles have prompted questions over Mark Robins’ future as Potters boss, but as it stands, the former Coventry City manager remains in place. Pressure is on the board to get recruitment spot on this summer if they’re to finally make meaningful progress.
New targets will be firmly on the radar, and reports state one player sought by Stoke City is Abubakr Barry. The 25-year-old midfielder has impressed in the Austrian Bundesliga with Austria Wien and has been the subject of a €3m (around £2.6m) bid from the Potters, as per Krone.
It is widely expected that Barry will move this summer as he looks to head to a higher division. Oxford United previously saw a bid of just over €2m rejected for his services.
Who is Stoke City target Abubakr Barry?
Barry was part of the Superstars Academy in The Gambia, where he was loaned to several teams in Israel. He moved for good in the summer of 2024, heading to Austria Wien.
There, the Banjul-born midfielder has grown into a starring role. Barry has mainly been operating in central midfield, but he can play in deeper areas or a more advanced position too.
Standing 190cm tall, Barry is a well-rounded midfielder with good physicality and dribbling. He is best in a box-to-box role and has proven to have goals in his game, managing four goals and four assists in 33 games across the 2025/26 season.
With a year left on his deal, Barry now seems intent on making a step up. Stoke City can offer him such a chance, but time will tell whether other clubs come to the table.

The midfield situation at Stoke City
Entering the summer transfer window, Stoke City know they have to strengthen.
The midfield is one area of focus with two players moving on. Steven Nzonzi and Lewis Baker have both been let go at the end of their contracts, leaving Ben Pearson, Tomas Rigo and Tatsuki Seko as the only natural central midfield players.
Barry will not be the only target on SCFC’s radar in this area. At least two additions to this department are required, but it remains to be seen whether they can land the Gambian midfielder as he looks for a step up.
Pressure is on the Potters hierarchy to deliver this summer after another mediocre campaign for the club.
