Southampton have made a formal offer to Corinthians for striker Yuri Alberto, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Saints are looking to bolster their attacking options after a disappointing start to the Premier League season. They failed to score in their first two matches and have turned to the 23-year-old to provide the scoring spark.
Alberto primarily operates as a striker but can also play in wider areas. He has been on the radar of several European clubs, including Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolves were keen on his signature in the January transfer window. West Ham United also showed interest in his services, but a move to east London never materialised.
The young forward has contributed 17 goals and three assists in 38 appearances for Corinthians this season. His arrival at St. Mary’s would provide a much-needed boost to Southampton’s frontline, which has struggled to find its rhythm.
Manager Russell Martin has acknowledged the team’s need for reinforcements in the attacking third, admitting that they are actively looking to bring in new players before the transfer deadline.
Southampton will receive around £14 million from the sale of midfielder Carlos Alcaraz to Flamengo. The funds generated from Alcaraz’s sale will give Southampton the financial flexibility to invest in Alberto and other potential targets.
Alberto has a proven track record in Brazilian football, having scored 43 goals and provided 14 assists in 129 appearances for the club. He could be a crucial player for the South Coast club as they look to avoid falling straight back into the Championship.
The Saints are already in danger after two match weeks following successive 1-0 losses to Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.
Despite already signing a host of players, they need more firepower in attack. They need a prolific striker to spearhead their survival charge, and the Corinthians man fits the bill.
