Southampton are now showing interest in signing a “special” striker who has been superb in the Champions League this season.
Saints eyeing new striker despite Larin’s impressive start
With Adam Armstrong moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers near the end of the winter transfer window, it was important for the Saints to bring in a replacement, and Cyle Larin has made an impressive start since arriving from RCD Mallorca on an initial loan deal.
Larin has two goals in his first three matches for Tonda Eckert’s side, and the manager praised the 30-year-old for the impact he made in the 1-0 victory against Watford, saying: “We knew with Cyle we would have the physical presence we need. He scored the goal but it was also the way he defended at the other end.
Eckert also added: “It has been very easy for him to find his spot in the changing room and combining that with a nice performance has made it even easier.”
That said, while the St. Mary’s outfit have turned things around as of late, winning their last three matches to move up to 10th place, they have fallen considerably short of expectations this season, given that automatic promotion would have been the objective.
As such, Southampton may need to bring in some more attacking firepower this summer, and they are now showing interest in signing Bodo/Glimt striker Kasper Hogh, according to a report from Sports Boom.
With Hogh impressing in the Champions League this season, his current employers are looking to hold out for €15m – €18m (£13m – £16m), and there could be competition for his signature, as Tottenham Hotspur and several foreign clubs are also credited with an interest.
“Special” Hogh has earned Premier League move
In light of their recent form, the Saints are now just two points off the play-off places, which means promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt is still a realistic possibility, and the Danish centre-forward has certainly earned a move to the top flight.
Perhaps most impressively, the 25-year-old, who has been lauded as “special” by former midfielder Frode Thomassen, tore Man City apart earlier this season, scoring a brace as the Norwegian club secured a surprise 3-1 victory against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Throughout his time in Norway, the Bodo/Glimt star has been prolific in front of goal, chipping in with 34 goals and ten assists in 65 Eliteserien matches, which suggests he is now ready to test himself in a stronger league.
As such, Southampton should undoubtedly make a move for Hogh this summer, but if he continues his current form, it would not be a surprise if some of Europe’s top clubs come calling too.
