Southampton have scouted Wigan Athletic’s young winger Harrison Bettoni, looking at a potential deal

Wigan Athletic FC - Harrison Bettoni | AFC Wimbledon (A) Reaction

Southampton are taking a look at Wigan Athletic’s 18-year-old winger Harrison Bettoni, reports Alan Nixon.

Alan Nixon has revealed on Patreon that Championship side Southampton have been keeping tabs on Wigan Athletic attacking Harrison Bettoni, who has made his breakthrough with the Latics this season.

The youngster made his league debut this season and has since featured nine times in League One, scoring three goals including the winner against Preston in the FA Cup earlier in the month.

Nixon says Southampton had a scout at that game watching Bettoni in action. He’s under professional contract until this summer but Wigan Athletic have an option to extend his deal by a further year.

Who is Southampton transfer target Harrison Bettoni?

Born in Stockport, Bettoni has been with Wigan Athletic since 2019. He’s worked his way through the youth ranks, impressing with the U16s who he captained towards a Professional Development League Cup in 2023, then playing with the U21s last season after notching 25 goal contributions in 2023/24 for the U16s.

He now has four goals in 14 games in all competitions for the senior team and has become an important player for Ryan Lowe‘s side, who are currently slumped 18th place of the League One table, and likely concerned about further interest in Bettoni emerging this month.

So far this month, Southampton have signed goalkeeper Daniel Peretz on loan. But the Saints are without an outfield signing amid what’s been a disappointing season so far for the club.

Recent reports have revealed how Southampton and Leicester City are tracking Issa Doumbia, who currently plays in midfield for Venezia, whilst Morgan Guilavogui is back on the club’s radar.

However, although Southampton have made an approach to sign Guilavogui from RC Lens, it’s understood that a deal for the winger is unlikely to happen in this month’s transfer window.

Elsewhere, Southampton have cashed in on Ronnie Edwards who signed for QPR in a £4.5million deal, whilst Gavin Bazunu and Damion Downs have both left St Mary’s on loan for the remainder of the season.
