Southampton have been linked with £20 million former Tottenham star

Southampton’s preparations for the Premier League began with the signings of Léo Scienza and Finn Azaz. Could another be on the way to St Mary’s?

Southampton have been linked with Sunderland’s Dennis Cirkin as a possible summer target, according to Sports Boom.

Cirkin is a 23-year-old left-back who has developed into a good young defender at Sunderland. He came through the Tottenham Hotspur academy before moving north and has represented England at youth level.

The rumour has some merit because Cirkin is a player with genuine potential and he ticks several boxes for Saints.

Age profile and potential fit

At 23 years old, Cirkin fits the profile of a Sport Republic recruit. Johannes Spors favours players with an obvious upside and resale value who can improve with coaching and first-team experience. Cirkin is at an age where his best years are still ahead of him, and Saints could shape him for life in the Premier League, even if that takes another season to achieve.

He has played over 100 times for Sunderland and was a key part of their promotion campaign, showing he can handle the pressure of another push for top-flight football, if required.

But his path to regular first-team football has been blocked at Sunderland after the Black Cats went on a summer spending spree, prompting Cirkin to consider a fresh start.

This kind of profile could fit what the Saints need, even if they go up. A left-back who can defend and support attacks can be invaluable at the Premier League level, especially when the league demands quality down both flanks.

Why the link makes sense

Cirkin’s situation this season shows he is not a guaranteed starter at Sunderland, which could make him available at a sensible price. That matters because Saints cannot afford to gamble, not if they intend to replace players of the calibre of Welington and Ryan Manning. Cirkin’s contract is nearing its end, and interest from other clubs suggests he may be open to a new chapter.

Southampton fans know that left-back is a position where the squad is at its weakest. Welington is a better full-back than Ryan Manning, but he is prone to injuries. Manning, on the other hand, is a prolific goalscorer and dead-ball expert, but doesn’t defend well at Championship level, let alone at Premier League standard.

If Saints are promoted, they will need players who can handle fast and technical wingers. Cirkin’s experience across League One, the Championship and limited Premier League minutes gives him a broad base to build on.

Cirkin may not be a starter right away, but his underlying ability and age suggest he can improve with consistent minutes. The Dubliner has shown glimpses of attacking intent and defensive work that could fit the Saints’ style.

Unlikely though it might be, his signing makes sense because Southampton need to strengthen at left-back even if they do not go up, and Cirkin fits the profile.

However, Birmingham City and Watford are also reportedly interested in Cirkin, which probably suggests that the deal won’t happen. What sounds like idle paper talk and agents drumming up interest in their client is usually just that.
