Southampton forward Offers to leave Saints in January transfer window

Southampton’s Damion Downs hasn’t featured since picking up an injury at the end of November.

Prior to that, the striker struggled to impress on the pitch for the Saints. He’s yet to score and contributed one assist from 14 matches.

Downs joined Southampton from 1. FC Köln in July and his current situation at St Mary’s has attracted interest from Germany.

A week ago, Kicker reported Hamburg SV have initiated contact over a loan move in the winter market. Later that day, Hamburger Morgenpost backed up their interest and stated he’s evaluating options.

A fresh report from explains the Bundesliga side are looking for a No.9 in January and the 21-year-old is one of the targets in their list.

They insist Downs has recovered from injury and needs regular minutes to retain hope of representing America at the next World Cup. It’s claimed he’s pushing for a move away from the Championship side.

A move to Hamburg is difficult as they have other targets higher than him in their list. In addition to this, the frontman has offers from other unnamed German clubs.

Bild also report Hamburg aren’t the only German club to be looking at the frontman. It’s claimed several Bundesliga sides that have better financial resources than HSV are keen.

Therefore, Hamburg’s chances of acquiring Downs’ services in January are ‘extremely slim’.
