SAINTS head coach Tonda Eckert confirmed goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is nearing a return, following his successful wrist surgery last month.
The 36 year old was last included in the matchday squad against Watford on February 7, missing the trip to Leicester City with a fresh wrist injury.
McCarthy, out of contract in June, has not made an appearance for Eckert, with number one Gavin Bazunu replaced by January signing Daniel Peretz.
After McCarthy was sidelined, Saints signed Jamie Jones from non-league Warrington to serve as an understudy to backup stopper George Long.
But he is nearing his return to full training, and could add to his 165 Saints appearances since signing from Reading in 2016 if Peretz is unavailable.
On McCarthy, Eckert said: “He’s starting his work on the pitch now and starting some handling over the next days. Then we will take it step by step.”
