Sophie Cunningham’s growing popularity in the WNBA has come with a deeply troubling downside. The Indiana Fever guard, who has become one of the league’s most recognizable personalities, is reportedly taking additional precautions after revealing disturbing details about stalking, threatening messages, and unwanted attention from individuals who have crossed the boundaries between fandom and personal life.

Cunningham recently disclosed that she has hired private security personnel who will accompany her around the clock while traveling. The decision represents a significant change in her everyday routine and highlights the increasingly complicated relationship between professional athletes and their supporters.

The revelation comes after Cunningham made another concerning claim during an appearance on Theo Von’s podcast, where she suggested that the FBI was monitoring approximately 20 individuals in connection with her safety concerns.

Although federal authorities have not publicly confirmed her statement, the situation has raised serious questions about athlete security and the risks that come with becoming a high-profile public figure.

SOPHIE CUNNINGHAM REVEALS WHY SHE IS HIRING 24/7 SECURITY

For Cunningham, the situation has reportedly developed over several months rather than happening overnight.

During an appearance on the No Hesitation podcast, the Fever guard explained how her growing recognition has affected her ability to enjoy ordinary activities.

She acknowledged that there was a time when she could travel to certain cities without attracting much attention. However, that experience has changed considerably.

Cunningham explained that people now recognize her almost everywhere, regardless of the state or city she visits.

Her response has been to bring in professional security.

She revealed that her security personnel would soon begin traveling with her around the clock, describing it as a major adjustment to her lifestyle.

While professional athletes regularly deal with autograph requests, photographs, and enthusiastic supporters, Cunningham’s experience appears to have gone beyond ordinary celebrity attention.

The guard has reportedly experienced threatening online communications and unwanted encounters that have made her more cautious about her surroundings.

A DISTURBING PACKAGE AT GAINBRIDGE FIELDHOUSE STARTED A LARGER CONCERN

One particularly troubling incident reportedly occurred in September 2025, when a package addressed simply to “Sophie” arrived at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

According to the report, the package contained a letter and a Guns N’ Roses T-shirt sprayed with cologne.

What might initially have appeared to be an unusual fan gesture reportedly became part of a much more concerning pattern of behavior.

The situation allegedly escalated through online messages and unwanted contact, leaving Cunningham increasingly uncomfortable with the attention.

The experience also affected her personal routine.

Cunningham previously indicated that she had been staying home more frequently and experiencing nightmares as the situation developed.

For an athlete whose professional responsibilities involve traveling, attending public events, and interacting with supporters, feeling unsafe outside the basketball court can create an entirely different challenge.

FBI INVESTIGATION CLAIM ADDS ANOTHER LAYER TO THE STORY

The security revelation became even more concerning after Cunningham appeared on Theo Von’s podcast.

During that conversation, she discussed the number of people allegedly connected to her stalking concerns.

“We do have a lot of stalkers. I know I do,” Cunningham said.

She also claimed that approximately 20 individuals were being monitored by the FBI.

However, there is an important distinction between Cunningham’s statement and what authorities have independently confirmed.

The FBI has not publicly verified the claim, and a spokesperson reportedly declined to comment when approached by the Daily Mail.

Cunningham did not identify the individuals allegedly being monitored or explain the precise circumstances surrounding federal involvement.

She also suggested that she was uncertain whether she was permitted to discuss certain details publicly.

Consequently, the claim should be understood as Cunningham’s account rather than a confirmed public statement from federal investigators.

SUSPECT FACES STALKING AND INTIMIDATION CHARGES

The report also identifies a separate criminal case involving an individual named Kevin Singh.

According to the published account, Singh was allegedly connected to the package delivered to Cunningham at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in September 2025.

Marion County prosecutors reportedly charged him in June with felony stalking and intimidation, alongside a misdemeanor harassment charge.

He has pleaded not guilty, meaning the allegations have not been established in court.

According to an affidavit described in the report, Cunningham first became aware of Singh’s online activity in February.

The alleged communications subsequently escalated, including messages sent through X.

One message reportedly stated: “You’re literally down the street from me!”

The Fever organization allegedly attempted to address the situation by sending a cease-and-desist letter on April 30. Singh was subsequently banned from the arena.

The report also states that Singh was already on probation in Hendricks County following a July 2025 guilty plea to two felony invasion-of-privacy counts.

The legal proceedings surrounding the newer allegations remain separate from Cunningham’s broader claims about the number of people allegedly being monitored.

CAITLIN CLARK’S PREVIOUS STALKING EXPERIENCE MAKES THE SITUATION EVEN MORE CONCERNING

Cunningham’s experience also brings renewed attention to the security challenges previously faced by her Indiana Fever teammate, Caitlin Clark.

Clark was targeted by a Texas man whose behavior resulted in a criminal case and a prison sentence.

The incident demonstrated that even athletes with enormous popularity and strong public support can become targets of unwanted attention.

Clark’s situation also highlighted the importance of organizations taking threats seriously rather than treating every uncomfortable interaction as an ordinary consequence of fame.

For the Fever, the experiences involving two recognizable players make athlete security an important organizational consideration.

Professional basketball teams have responsibilities that extend beyond training facilities, game preparation, and travel arrangements.

Protecting players from harassment and potential threats is another important part of maintaining a safe working environment.

CUNNINGHAM IS ALSO CHANGING HOW SHE INTERACTS WITH FANS

Despite the difficulties, Cunningham has not suggested that she intends to completely abandon interactions with supporters.

She still takes photographs and signs autographs, but she has reportedly become more deliberate about establishing personal boundaries.

One example involves situations where fans approach her while she is eating at a restaurant.

Cunningham explained that people should allow her to finish her meal before requesting photographs or autographs.

Her reasoning is understandable: agreeing to one request can quickly lead to several other people approaching, turning a private moment into an extended public interaction.

She also described how constant recognition has affected visits home, sometimes leaving her feeling that she has spent more time with strangers than with her own family.

That is a difficult balance for any professional athlete.

Fans often feel connected to players because they watch them regularly, follow their social media accounts, and support their teams. However, that connection does not automatically create a right to access an athlete’s private life.

Cunningham’s experience highlights the importance of recognizing that distinction.

WHY THIS COULD BECOME A BIGGER CONVERSATION FOR THE WNBA

Cunningham’s decision to hire around-the-clock security raises questions that extend beyond one Indiana Fever player.

The WNBA has experienced enormous growth in public attention, with players becoming recognizable personalities far beyond traditional basketball audiences.

That increased visibility creates commercial opportunities, attracts new supporters, and helps athletes build their personal brands.

But greater exposure can also create additional security challenges.

Players must navigate public appearances, social media interactions, road trips, restaurants, hotels, and other environments where their personal space can become difficult to protect.

Cunningham’s experience also demonstrates why teams may need to continually evaluate their security arrangements as individual players become more recognizable.

For the Fever, ensuring that players can travel and enjoy their personal lives without feeling constantly exposed should remain an important priority.

SOPHIE CUNNINGHAM’S NEXT CHAPTER COMES WITH NEW BOUNDARIES

Cunningham’s popularity increased significantly after joining Indiana in 2025 following six seasons with the Phoenix Mercury.

Her competitive personality, physical style of play, and willingness to express her opinions helped establish her as one of the Fever’s most recognizable personalities.

She also delivered an impressive shooting season in 2026, reportedly connecting on a career-high 46% of her field-goal attempts.

However, her latest revelations show that the attention surrounding her career has created challenges that cannot be measured through basketball statistics.

Hiring private security is a significant lifestyle adjustment, particularly for someone who previously enjoyed a greater degree of freedom while traveling.

Whether the reported FBI monitoring claim receives further clarification remains to be seen. For now, Cunningham’s decision to increase her personal protection sends a clear message about the seriousness of the concerns she has described.

The Fever guard wants to continue enjoying her basketball career and interacting with supporters, but she also wants to protect her privacy and spend time with the people closest to her.

Ultimately, being a recognizable athlete should never mean surrendering the right to personal safety.
