Phoenix Suns Basketball

The Phoenix Suns have officially re-signed Josh Okogie, the team announced today.

Phoenix now has 15 of 15 standard contracts officially signed, meaning its roster is complete barring any trades or waiving players.

The release reads:

“The Phoenix Suns today announced that the team has re-signed guard/forward Josh Okogie. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Okogie (6’-4”, 213 pounds) averaged 6.1 points and 3.1 rebounds in 132 games with 37 starts over the last two seasons with the Suns. Winner of the 2023 Majerle Hustle Award, given to the Suns player who best exemplifies grit and determination, Okogie is one of only four guards in the NBA to total at least 175 offensive rebounds, 100 steals and 50 blocks over the last two seasons combined.

“The 25-year-old holds career averages of 6.3 points on 40.2% shooting and 3.0 rebounds in 376 games across six seasons with the Suns and Minnesota Timberwolves, while also appearing in 15 career playoff games. Originally selected by Minnesota with the 20th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Okogie participated in the Rising Stars game at NBA All-Star in each of his first two seasons. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Okogie has represented his home country’s national team at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup among other international competitions.”

Per multiple reports, the Suns agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal with Okogie two days ago and the money is non-guaranteed in the second season. Okogie’s contract gives the Suns the first projected $400 million payroll in NBA history in the 2024-25 season.

Phoenix does not have much shooting depth and with Okogie struggling with his shot last year and throughout his career, he might falter behind on the depth chart as he did last season.

Right now, Okogie will be competing for minutes off the bench with Grayson Allen/Royce O’Neale, Monte Morris, Ryan Dunn, Damion Lee, Nassir Little and David Roddy.
