PHILLIES MANAGER BOMBSHELL: DON MATTINGLY’S RETURN CHANCES GROW AFTER IMPRESSIVE TURNAROUND

The Philadelphia Phillies may be moving closer to keeping Don Mattingly as their manager for the 2027 MLB season, and his impressive turnaround after taking over a struggling team could be the biggest reason why.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Mattingly appears to have a “decent or better chance” of being retained by the Phillies. The veteran baseball figure helped guide Philadelphia from a disappointing 9-19 start to a 79-55 record under his leadership, ultimately securing a postseason berth.

Although the Phillies’ season ended in disappointment against the Atlanta Braves, Mattingly’s overall performance has strengthened the argument that he deserves an opportunity to lead the team through a full season.

For a franchise with championship ambitions, the decision could shape not only the coaching staff but also the direction of the roster heading into 2027.

DON MATTINGLY’S CHANCES OF RETURNING TO PHILADELPHIA ARE IMPROVING

Mattingly initially joined the Phillies as bench coach before stepping into the managerial role after Philadelphia dismissed Rob Thomson on April 28, following the team’s 9-19 start.

The situation demanded an immediate response. Philadelphia had opened the campaign poorly, and the organization needed someone capable of restoring confidence and getting the clubhouse back on track.

Mattingly delivered a significant improvement.

The Phillies went 79-55 under his leadership and reached the postseason, demonstrating that the team could remain competitive despite its difficult opening stretch. That turnaround has become a central part of the argument for bringing him back.

Heyman’s latest report suggests Mattingly is now a serious contender to remain in charge.

However, the Phillies have not officially announced their decision. Until president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski confirms the club’s plans, Mattingly’s future remains uncertain.

WHY MATTINGLY HAS EARNED ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY

The strongest argument for retaining Mattingly is the way Philadelphia responded after his appointment.

Taking over a team with a 9-19 record is not an easy assignment, particularly when expectations are high and the roster contains established stars accustomed to competing deep into October.

Mattingly helped stabilize the situation and guide the Phillies into the playoffs. His experience managing the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins also gave him a level of familiarity with the pressures of leading a major-league clubhouse.

Just as importantly, players publicly expressed their appreciation for his work.

Following Philadelphia’s postseason elimination, Kyle Schwarber praised Mattingly’s demeanor during a difficult period, while J.T. Realmuto made it clear that he valued the interim manager. Aaron Nola also expressed support for him.

That backing matters.

A manager needs more than tactical knowledge to succeed in Philadelphia. The job requires communication, emotional control and the ability to keep a veteran roster focused when expectations are not being met.

Mattingly appeared to establish that connection.

Still, winning the players’ respect does not automatically guarantee the job. Dombrowski must determine whether Mattingly is the best person to guide the organization toward a World Series championship.

ALEX CORA’S DECISION COULD OPEN THE DOOR

One important development in Philadelphia’s managerial search is Alex Cora’s reported decision to step away from managing during the 2027 season.

Cora had previously been considered a potential candidate because of his relationship with Dombrowski, with whom he won the 2018 World Series while managing the Boston Red Sox.

However, reports indicate that Cora declined the Phillies’ opportunity and intends to take the 2027 season off. That removes a prominent name from the immediate discussion and could strengthen Mattingly’s position.

The Phillies now face a decision: retain the manager who helped rescue their season or conduct a broader search for another candidate.

There are arguments for both approaches.

Hiring an outside manager could bring a fresh perspective and a different approach to postseason preparation. Keeping Mattingly would provide continuity after a season in which the team responded positively to his leadership.

Given the uncertainty surrounding the availability of alternative candidates, Mattingly’s familiarity with the players and organization could become an increasingly valuable advantage.

THE PLAYOFF EXIT STILL RAISES SERIOUS QUESTIONS

Mattingly’s regular-season turnaround deserves recognition, but Philadelphia’s postseason elimination cannot be ignored.

The Phillies lost 6-2 to the Braves in Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series, ending their season before they could make a serious run toward the World Series. The defeat also extended their frustrating run of postseason series losses dating back to the 2023 National League Championship Series.

That result leaves the organization facing questions that go beyond the manager.

Philadelphia must determine whether its roster has enough offensive consistency, reliable bullpen depth and postseason flexibility to overcome elite opponents.

A managerial change alone would not automatically solve those problems.

Mattingly inherited a team that was already struggling, and his record after taking over suggests that he helped restore its competitiveness. However, the Phillies must also evaluate the decisions made during their playoff defeat and consider whether adjustments are needed in high-pressure situations.

If the front office believes the roster needs significant upgrades, keeping Mattingly could provide stability while those changes are implemented.

If the organization believes a different managerial approach is necessary to get past the early rounds of the playoffs, the postseason disappointment could weigh more heavily in its decision.

DAVE DOMBROWSKI MUST LOOK BEYOND THE MANAGERIAL POSITION

The manager’s future is only one piece of a much larger offseason puzzle.

Philadelphia has major roster questions to address, including the need to improve its offensive production and strengthen the bullpen. The team must also assess its free-agent situation and determine which players should remain part of its championship plans.

Those decisions could influence Mattingly’s willingness to return as well.

A manager entering a new season needs a roster capable of competing at the highest level. If the Phillies make meaningful upgrades, Mattingly could have a better opportunity to build on the progress he made in 2026.

On the other hand, another offseason filled with uncertainty could complicate the challenge.

The front office must also consider the expectations surrounding a veteran core that has experienced repeated postseason disappointment. Bryce Harper indicated after the elimination that the 2027 team could look considerably different, highlighting the possibility of significant change.

Whether Mattingly returns or another manager takes over, Philadelphia needs a clear plan for turning regular-season success into a deeper October run.

COULD DON MATTINGLY BE THE RIGHT MAN TO LEAD THE PHILLIES IN 2027?

There is a compelling case for keeping Mattingly.

He took over a team that had started 9-19, guided it to a 79-55 record under his leadership and helped Philadelphia reach the postseason. He also earned public support from important players in the clubhouse.

Those accomplishments should carry weight when Dombrowski evaluates the managerial position.

However, the Phillies cannot make the decision based solely on the turnaround. Their ultimate objective is not simply to recover from a poor start or qualify for the playoffs. It is to win a championship.

Mattingly must convince the organization that he can help them take that next step.

My prediction: Mattingly has a realistic path to returning as Phillies manager, and the latest report makes his candidacy worth taking seriously. With Cora reportedly planning to sit out the 2027 season, continuity could become the more attractive option for Philadelphia.

Still, the final decision will depend on Dombrowski’s evaluation of the roster, the available alternatives and the organization’s expectations for the coming season.

For Phillies fans, the question is no longer just whether Mattingly did enough to save the 2026 campaign. It is whether he is the right person to lead the franchise through its next championship push.

FINAL VERDICT

Don Mattingly has given the Phillies a strong reason to consider bringing him back.

His 79-55 record after replacing Thomson demonstrated that the team could respond to adversity, while the support he received from players strengthened his case for the permanent position.

But Philadelphia’s postseason struggles remain a warning that regular-season improvement is not enough.

If Mattingly returns, the challenge will be clear: build on the progress of 2026, help the Phillies address their weaknesses and deliver a deeper playoff run.

The decision now rests with the Philadelphia front office, and the outcome could shape the franchise’s direction throughout the 2027 season.
