Prior to Saturday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners, the Mets activated reliever Reed Garrett from the injured list and optioned left-hander Alex Young to Triple-A Syracuse.
Garrett was expected to make his return at some point this weekend after concluding his rehab and joining the team in Seattle, and now they make the move official.
The right-hander ends up missing exactly one month after experiencing inflammation in his right elbow following a rough outing in which he allowing three runs in just two-thirds of an inning of work against the Nationals.
Garrett will certainly be a welcomed addition to the backend of the revamped Mets bullpen, though, as he’s pitched to a strong 3.64 ERA across 36 appearances this season.
Young losing out on his spot is a bit of tough luck, as he’s pitched relatively well since being recalled from Triple-A, allowing just one earned run and striking out six over his seven appearances.
The southpaw could jump back into the mix at the big leagues again at some point later this season if Danny Young struggles and finds his way back down to Syracuse as well.
The Mets will have two more tough decision to make in the near future as well with relievers Dedniel Nunez and Sean Reid-Foley closing in on their own returns from the injured list.
