Mets Proposed Trade To Sign All-Star Slugger To Monster $182 Million Deal

The New York Mets rocked the baseball world this week by signing outfielder Juan Soto to a historic 15-year, $765 million deal. Now that the Soto pursuit is over, president of baseball operations David Stearns has other items to complete on his winter to-do list. Is re-signing first baseman Pete Alonso the next thing he’ll do?

While the Mets plan to make more additions to the pitching staff, Alonso reaching free agency has left a significant hole at first base. The slugger has recorded 226 career home runs with New York, which already ranks third in franchise history. He’s also been durable since landing in the big leagues. Alonso has played in at least 152 games in each full season since debuting in 2019 and hasn’t finished with fewer than 34 home runs or 88 RBI during that time.

The 30-year-old slugger has been linked to various teams outside of Queens, some of which include the New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros and Washington Nationals. Stearns has publicly stated the Mets would like to retain the Polar Bear. Team owner Steve Cohen is also hopeful New York can work something out with its homegrown slugger.

As Alonso’s market starts to take shape with Soto off the board, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller believes he’ll remain in Queens with the Mets.

“It still feels like the Mets are the favorite to make Alonso the big bat behind Soto that Aaron Judge was in 2024,” Miller wrote.

While Spotrac projects Alonso’s market value at six years and $174 million, Miller is predicting the slugger will sign a six-year, $182 million pact with the Mets.
