Leicester City And Stockport County With Their Fair Share of Records in English Football That Might Never Be Broken

Leicester City have their fair share of records in English football, with their 2015/16 campaign one that lives long in the memory of supporters of all clubs.

It’s been nine years since Claudio Ranieri, arguably the club’s greatest manager, guided the Foxes to a miraculous Premier League title victory, and in 2021 they lifted the FA Cup for the first time in their history.

While the last few years have been a lot less enjoyable, Leicester have enjoyed their greatest days over the course of the last decade and that has led to the King Power Stadium being full more often than not.

Yet there is one record that the Foxes do hold, and few supporters will realise that they do, with Stockport County, who had hoped to meet Leicester in the Championship this season, the other component in it.

Leicester City and Stockport County hold the record for the lowest attended league game in England

It was on May 7 1921 when the Foxes faced the Hatters at Old Trafford in the Second Division, as the two were forced to watch on as Manchester United faced Derby County earlier that day.

Stockport’s ground was closed at the time, forcing the two to meet at the Red Devils’ stadium – meaning both sides were forced to travel.

Officially, only 13 people paid for a ticket to watch the two sides face one another, meaning that the attendance was technically in the teens.

However, there was a crowd of over 10,000 at the very least, as plenty stayed on at Old Trafford to watch the Greater Manchester side face Leicester, but the two clubs will forever hold that bizarre and unique record.

It’s been 90 years since the record league attendance was last broken

The early 20th century was the turning point for modern day football, and crowds flocked to games every Saturday at 3pm.

The financial boost of large attendances is huge, and Leicester will be hoping to continue their high crowds this season despite the Foxes having parachute payments.

Nevertheless, they could only dream of having a crowd quite like the 82,905 that saw Chelsea face Arsenal in the First Division in 1935. It was a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge; nevertheless, it remains the most attended league game in English football history.
