Fullback Linked with Castleford Tigers Exit Amid Squad Reshuffle Speculation

Tex Hoy, the Australian fullback currently sidelined with a calf injury, has unexpectedly found himself at the centre of transfer speculation, with rumours emerging that he may be heading for the Castleford Tigers exit door despite being under contract the end of the 2026 Super League season.

Hoy, 25, joined Castleford in mid-2024 following a short-lived and turbulent spell at Hull FC. Since arriving at the Jungle, he has shown flashes of the dynamic play that once made him a standout in the NRL with the Newcastle Knights. His attacking flair, strong running game, and ability to cover multiple positions made him a key mid-season addition as Castleford looked to rebuild after a difficult start to the year.

In June 2024, Castleford rewarded Hoy with a two-year contract extension, signalling their belief in his long-term value to the squad. However, a recent calf injury has kept him on the sidelines, and in his absence, younger players such as Fletcher Rooney have emerged as credible options at fullback. The rise of internal competition, combined with recent squad reshuffles and recruitment activity, has led to whispers that Hoy may not be central to Castleford’s plans after all.

While there has been no official confirmation from the club suggesting Hoy is on his way out, speculation has grown due to comments made by Castleford’s Director of Rugby, Chris Chester, who recently addressed Hoy’s future when asked by the media. Chester stated that the club expects Hoy to return from injury and remain a key part of their plans for the 2026 season, but stopped short of firmly denying that movement within the squad could lead to changes in Hoy’s status.

Adding fuel to the fire are reports that Castleford are actively exploring further recruitment options in the spine positions—particularly at fullback and in the halves. With overseas quota spots tight and Super League salary cap pressures always in play, moving on a contracted overseas player could create flexibility for additional signings.

Hoy’s own words since joining Castleford suggest a player still committed to the cause. In a recent interview, he acknowledged his struggles at Hull FC and spoke positively about finding form and happiness in West Yorkshire. “This is a fresh start for me,” he said. “I want to be part of what this club is building.”

Nevertheless, in the fast-moving world of rugby league, things can change quickly. Clubs regularly reassess their rosters based on form, injuries, and emerging talent. While there is no clear indication that Hoy is set to leave imminently, the combination of injury setbacks, contract flexibility clauses, and strategic recruitment could see Castleford entertain options if they feel a change is in their best interests.

For now, Tex Hoy remains a Castleford Tigers player under contract. Whether that remains the case by the start of the 2026 season will depend on his recovery, form, and how the Tigers’ evolving squad shapes up in the months ahead.
