Leeds United face a new blow as French side Marseille are close to reaching an agreement for Norwich City’s Jonathan Rowe. The English winger was a top priority for Leeds as they’d hoped that the 21-year-old would replace Crysencio Summerville.
The saga started with rumors of The Whites verbally offering £7 million for the Rowe. This offer was rejected as Norwich City felt that it was too low for their academy graduate.
“I’m worried Leeds have lost too many players to challenge for automatic promotion” – Leeds United legend.
Things heated up as Wolverhampton Wanderers also joined the race to pursue the winger. Wolves being a Premier League club and possessing more money had an unfair advantage over Leeds.
However, things settled down as Wanderers dropped interest in the winger. Later, Norwich City demanded £15 million for Jonathan which United wasn’t ready to pay.
There have been rumours that The 49ers were going to come back with an improved offer but the valuation between the clubs had already turned into a problematic situation.
The West Yorkshire outfit is in dire need of a winger following the departure of Championship Player of the Season Crysencio Summerville. Now, the club lacks depth up front which might prove detrimental to their shot at promotion.
Rowe still remains The 49ers’ top priority while other targets sit in the background getting snatched by other clubs.
Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille front-runners to sign Jonathan Rowe
According to The Sun Print Edition dated 09/08/2024 (page 51), Marseille are confident to pen down a deal for Jonathan Rowe. The French Giants will be looking at a deal of £8 million.
Getting a deal below £10 million was also how Leeds United wanted it. But Norwich’s high valuation led them to reevaluate their offer taking them too much time to get back.
Now, Marseille remain the front-runners as Leeds will need to find other solutions to their winger problems. The 49ers have agreed to loan terms with Crystal Palace for Jesurun Rak-Sakyi but the player is yet to decide his future.
There are three clubs on the table with Sheffield United being the front runners. The other clubs include Leeds United and Hull City. Jesurun wants to make this quick as he’d like to feature in the first game of the campaign.
Ryan Kent was another option but now the Englishman will be flying to England for Ipswich rather than Leeds. Fenerbahçe have agreed on a deal worth £2.5 million with the player and the club yet to agree on the minute details.
If both Jonathan and Rak-Sayi are out then the only two options that remain are Sontje Hansen and Morgan Whittaker.
