Frank Lampard Speaks Up After First CBS Arena Win

Frank Lampard admitted he was left scratching his head at half-time when Coventry City came in trailing to Hull after dominating the play but being unable to find the back of the net.

The Sky Blues were hit by a smash and grab goal from bottom of the table Tigers just before the break but Ephron Mason-Clark pulled the home side level early in the second period before providing a brilliant assist for Jack Rudoni to head home the winner after Victor Torp had a penalty saved by the visiting goalkeeper.

Asked if it was a scratch your head moment at half-time, the Coventry boss said: “Yeah, we were, and it was really important to get the message to the players to understand because they would have felt the game. It was disappointing and I know there have been some previous games through the season that have felt like that, where they have had chances, not taken them and then that’s happened.

“So I thought that was the great thing throughout the game, the character to keep doing the right things, which we did, and you feel that if you keep doing them then eventually you will get your breaks. So I am happy with the whole 90 minutes.

“There have been things that we have spoken about going into this game and there were big improvements, especially with our off the ball work, some of our build and play, so it was a good day.”

The 2-1 victory was Lampard’s second win since taking charge but first at the CBS Arena where the fans, again, played a big part in sticking with the team when they went behind.

“Yeah they really did,” agreed the head coach, “and a big thank-you to the fans because we are quite a young team. The team I picked today was relatively young and they are trying to do the right things and sometimes things go against you – like the goal going in for Hull when we have dominated the half. That’s when you really need them and they were there, and I could feel the connection at the end of the game.

“I always say it’s up to us to energise them, we can’t be too slow with our game and have to try to do the right things and excite them with forward passing and speeding the game up, and I think there was a lot that they would be happy with today.”
