The summer transfer window slams shut on August 30th. Though if it were to close now then Sheffield Wednesday could safely say they’ve enjoyed a strong summer.
10 players have signed for the Owls this summer with the most recent being Sheffield Wednesday’s permanent capture of Ike Ugbo.
Ugbo arrives after weeks of back and forth between Wednesday and Troyes, who eventually agreed on a £3million fee for Ugbo.
More signings are expected in S6 this month. But it’s likely that Rohl and owner Dejphon Chansiri will want some names off the wage bill before August 30th as well.
Several names have had transfer interest this summer; Wrexham are keen to sign Bailey Cadamarteri on loan, whilst Rotherham United have been mentioned alongside both Micheal Smith and Mallik Wilks.
It’s recently been revealed that Rotherham United are in talks to sign Wilks, whilst Millers boss Steve Evans played down interest in Smith earlier this month.
Danny Rohl verdict on Sheffield Wednesday player exits
Speaking to The Star, Rohl didn’t shy away from the fact that there’s interest in some of his Sheffield Wednesday first-team players, and that some could leave.
Rohl began: “Some clubs are looking for our players. It starts now and this is normal.
“We are in some positions where we are proactive and this is the honest conversations we have had, to give some players a clear picture and schedule for what we want to do.
“We will see who moves, but the big thing – and this was a crucial part in January – I was always very open with them. This is sometimes hard for them.
“Now we have games and games and maybe you have time you are not in the squad or you are just on the bench, but the important thing is they know where they are in the club.”
Who else should Sheffield Wednesday look to sell this summer
Sheffield Wednesday don’t reveal all contract lengths, but they have a few first-team players thought to be out of contract in 2025 who may well be moved on this summer.
Callum Paterson seems like one; although a well-liked and useful member of the team, he’s very much a back-up player for Sheffield Wednesday right now.
Then the likes of Smith is out of contract next summer too, and perhaps depending on whether or not Wilks heads to Rotherham and whether or not Cadamarteri is sent out on loan, Smith could be one who’s moved on to free up some space in the budget.
Right now, Sheffield Wednesday have plenty of depth. But one or two exits may give the Owls some breathing space in the wage bill after a strong summer transfer window, with a lot of good signings.
