Coventry City Boss Frank Lampard Outlines His Ambitions For The New Season Ahead

Frank Lampard has used the summer months to take stock of his task in hand at Coventry City, setting out his ambition to start the season where the team left off – as a top three or four Championship side.

The Sky Blues boss says he’s had his down time with his family and is ready for the “full blast” of the new campaign all the way through until next May when he is determined to do even better than this year’s play-off semi-finals.

Key to doing that will be seeing his team get better under his guidance, and the City boss says “conversations” are on-going as to how and where to further improve his squad this summer.

He’s already added two new players in left-back Miguel Angel Brau and right-back Kaine Kesler-Hayden, and fans will be hoping that a few more fresh faces with plenty of talent will be joining them.

Asked how he’s spent the off-season, Lampard said: “It’s allowed me to have some family time, which is great. We all need that in the job that we do and I know we’re very fortunate to do what we do, but when it comes to breaks, when you come back it’s pretty full-blast all the way through until next May.

“I’m used to that side of it, so that’s fine. I’ve had my break but when you’re a head coach you’re forever considering how can we improve and it’s as simple as that.

“Through the summer it’s been good and a good pause for me to consider how we can improve, because what we did last year, which I think was a great effort from everyone in the group from the moment we came in to where we ended up.

“I think we were very unfortunate to not make the final and anyone who watched the two semi-final legs will know that, but that is football and we have to use that as a carrot and some mental strength and resilience to understand that football can do that to you, but how can we be better and how can we be better next season.”

Speaking to the club’s media team, he added: “From my point of view I think about how can we train, coach and work with the players and what are we’re going to look like.

“And also how can we improve the squad because where we need to improve the squad, those conversations go on all summer and I’m determined we get as strong a squad in as a healthy of a position as we can for the start of the season to try and play as we were at the back end of the season, because we were playing like a top 3/4 side in the Championship, there’s no doubt.

“I was really pleased with the players because that’s them that’s the group, improving, listening, working, being together and showing their qualities, but I want more and so do the players, so it’s been a good break and we’re ready to go.”
