Middlesbrough have made the decision to part ways with Michael Carrick after an underwhelming Championship campaign.
It has been confirmed by the club that they now begin the search for a new head coach after almost three years under the 43-year-old.
Carrick initially led the team to a fourth place finish in his first campaign in charge, but they have since slid to eighth and 10th in the following two years.
Missing out on the play-off places by four points has proven enough to warrant a change in manager after a difficult year for the Teesside outfit.
Middlesbrough urged to appoint Danny Rohl
When asked for his immediate thoughts following Carrick’s dismissal, FLW’s Middlesbrough fan pundit Liam Day has claimed it was the absolute right decision.
He has urged the club to pursue Sheffield Wednesday coach Danny Rohl as a replacement, suggesting it’s an opportunity Boro cannot afford to pass up.
“I think the decision to sack Carrick was 100 per cent the right one,” Day told Football League World.
“I can appreciate the work he did developing younger players.
Middlesbrough have today sacked head coach Michael Carrick.
“He’s made us a lot of money in his time here, and I can respect him for that.
“But last year following Middlesbrough was arguably my least favourite season.
“I am done.
“The football was boring, predictable, tons of managers came out and said ‘well, we know how they’re going to play,’ that’s not really acceptable.

“My replacement would be Danny Rohl.
“Obviously, a lot of bad things are going on at Sheffield Wednesday at the moment.
“He’s there for the taking.
“He’s clearly a very talented manager, and that’s an opportunity Boro cannot miss out on, in my opinion.”
Michael Carrick’s availability will catch attention
Carrick did good work at Middlesbrough, and a combination of major player sales and unlucky injury issues cost the team from reaching the play-offs a second time in his tenure.
He brought through the likes of Hayden Hackney, and helped to develop Rav van den Berg, Morgan Rogers and Emmanuel Latte Lath, among others.
Carrick proved himself a solid Championship coach, and his availability will now surely spark the interest of several other clubs still looking for a new manager.
But if Middlesbrough can get Rohl from Sheffield Wednesday, then he could prove a worthy replacement.
