The Magpies have snapped up former Arsenal and Norwich youth player Matthew Dennis on a three-year deal in their first signing of the summer.
23-year-old Matthew Dennis is Meadow Lane’s first arrival in this summer transfer window.
Dennis is an academy graduate from Arsenal who was called up to England youth teams, but his attacking progression swelled upon a move away from Hale End to Norwich.
He made no appearances for the first team of The Canaries in his first season but featured in the second team.
His loan to Southend United then proved pivotal for his career as he earned the plaudits of many in the National League as a teenager.
A permanent move to League One side MK Dons in the summer of 2022 came next.
He was initially a regularly selected player, but transfer activity undertaken by new boss Mark Jackson saw Dennis shifted out of the club on loan to Sutton United a division lower.
His momentum stalled and he experienced a goalscoring drought to end the 2022/23 campaign, and struggled with injury setbacks upon his return to The Dons.
In the season just past, Scott Lindsey was prompted to hand Dennis a third loan spell at Rochdale back in the National League to get some game time under his belt again.
He ended the last campaign with Carlisle United, who were in a perilous position in League Two, fighting to stay clear of the relegation zone.
Dennis scored 6 goals in 14 games for The Cumbrians, which turned out to be the most of any player at the club, despite only joining in February.
With the departure of homegrown Notts County veteran David McGoldrick, as well as George Abbott returning to parent club Tottenham Hotspur, Dennis seems a necessary and worthy replacement.
