Brazilian giants Corinthians have reportedly made contact with Southampton over the potential signing of attacking midfielder this summer with a £25 million release clause

Brazilian giants Corinthians have reportedly made contact with Southampton over the potential signing of attacking midfielder Léo Scienza this summer — but the 27-year-old’s £25 million release clause may prove to be an insurmountable obstacle for one of South America’s biggest clubs.

Scienza has been one of the standout players in the English Championship this season. Signed from German club Heidenheim last summer for a fee of around £7-8 million, the Brazilian has been worth every penny and then some — registering an impressive tally of goals and assists that has not just helped Southampton mount a promotion push, but has also attracted the attention of some of the biggest clubs in European football.

The Brazilian Connection

The Corinthians approach, while romantic in its nature, faces one enormous problem: money. Southampton are working with a release clause set at £25 million — a figure that sits well beyond what Brazilian clubs typically spend on a single player. To put it in perspective, the most expensive signing in Brazilian football history is Lucas Paquetá’s move to Flamengo from West Ham United earlier this year, which cost around £36 million. Deals of that magnitude are extraordinarily rare in South American football, and Corinthians are unlikely to be in a position to match Southampton’s valuation.

Alongside Corinthians, fellow Brazilian clubs Grêmio and Bahia — the latter operating within the City Football Group structure — have also made exploratory inquiries. But realistically, all three approaches are expected to remain exactly that: exploratory. The financial gap between what these clubs can offer and what Southampton will demand is simply too large to bridge.

Europe Remains the Destination

Scienza himself has made his intentions relatively clear. The 27-year-old has expressed a preference to remain in Europe and test himself in the Premier League — a stage his performances this season suggest he is more than ready for. His stunning display against Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals, in which Southampton caused one of the upsets of the season, placed him firmly on the radar of the Premier League’s elite.

Interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Everton, Fulham and Leeds United has all been reported, with some clubs understood to have already moved into deeper internal assessments ahead of the summer window. These are the sides Scienza is most likely dreaming of — not a return to South America.

Southampton’s Dilemma

For Southampton, the situation is as straightforward as it is uncomfortable. The £25 million release clause written into Scienza’s contract — which runs until 2029 — means the club has no ability to block a sale if a club meets that figure. Their best chance of keeping him? Win promotion to the Premier League. If Southampton earn a top-flight return through the Championship playoffs, the proposition of staying suddenly becomes far more attractive for a player hungry for the biggest stage.

If they fall short, all bets are off. The queue of Premier League suitors will be long, the release clause is there to be triggered, and Corinthians — despite their best intentions — will almost certainly be watching from afar.

Léo Scienza’s future is one of the most intriguing transfer stories of the summer. But all roads appear to lead to the Premier League, not back home to Brazil.
