The Boston Red Sox have a bit of an issue with pitching depth. This issue was placed on display when Tanner Houck, one of the team’s more reliable pitchers, brutally struggled in his last start. It’s clear the Red Sox need to add another pitcher to the roster this season, and they could look to do so in a big way.
Earlier this week, I proposed a hypothetical trade that would send Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara to Boston in exchange for a loaded haul of players. Here’s the full trade below:
Red Sox acquire: RHP Sandy Alcántara
Marlins acquire: UTL Ceddanne Rafaela, SS/2B Franklin Arias, RHP David Sandlin, SS/2B Mikey Romero
If the Red Sox are serious about topping the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, and Toronto Blue Jays in the loaded American League East, this is the trade they need to make.
Ceddanne Rafaela is a very valuable outfielder, but the Red Sox have a plethora of young options out there. Boston is currently looking to make room for top prospect Roman Anthony, and trading Rafaela would clear this spot for Anthony.
The duo of Mikey Romero and Franklin Arias is two valuable young infield prospects that the Marlins would welcome to their organization. Boston has a lot of big league-level infielders, as well as prospect Marcelo Mayer. Losing these two prospects would hurt, but it wouldn’t cripple the Red Sox.
David Sandlin is a solid pitching prospect who’s off to a hot start this year, but the Red Sox have enough young pitching that they could trade him. Plus, acquiring Alcántara would add a staple to the rotation for a few years.
The Red Sox have the resources to add Alcántara this season. Placing him atop the rotation next to Garrett Crochet would give Boston one of the best pitching duos in the league for the next few seasons.
