Birmingham City Star Speaks Up After Summer Transfer Exit On Deadline Day

Tyler Roberts has admitted he’s been ‘unfortunate’ at Birmingham City as he hopes to take his chance at Northampton Town after being loaned out.

The 25-year-old departed St Andrew’s on deadline day, joining their League One rivals on a season-long loan deal. Roberts fell down the pecking order under Chris Davies following the arrivals of Luke Harris, Willum Willumsson, and Jay Stansfield.

Before his departure, Roberts made two appearances in the Carabao Cup, but there was no place for him in the match-day squad in any of their league fixtures. He is under contract to Birmingham until the summer of 2027 after joining the club last summer, and it is hoped that he can rediscover his form whilst out on loan.

“Consistency,” replied Roberts to the Northampton Chronicle and Echo when asked what he wanted to get from his loan spell at Sixfields.

“That’s what I have struggled with over the last couple of seasons. I think I’ve been unfortunate with injuries and mismanagement but I’m coming into this season knowing my body is strong.

“I’ve had a good off-season and I had a good pre-season and I’m just hoping I can get into the team first of all and make the team better and then perform at a good level consistently.

“I just want to show the ability that I know I have. I’ve struggled to have much time to do that over the last two years but I know the work I’ve put in and if I get the chance, I’m ready to show what I’m all about.”

Roberts joined Birmingham on a free transfer after leaving Leeds United on a free transfer last summer. He was limited to 19 appearances across all competitions last season, making just eight starts. An injury on his debut against Swansea City put him out for three months, and then during their end-of-season run-in, he was an unused substitute in five of their last seven games.

Speaking to the Northampton Chronicle and Echo about his move, he said: “I think coming here just felt right after speaking to the manager and I came in knowing that I’ll get an opportunity to play a good amount of games this season and that’s what I want.

“The manager knows I can play in multiple positions, which was very attractive for him, and I’m going to get my head down and prove my fitness and prove my ability and go again and help the team as much as possible.”
