Birmingham City Owner Issues Last Season Experience After Relegation

Tom Wagner insists ‘nothing will stop’ Knighthead from going on another spending spree if Birmingham City’s current crop of players require help to reach the Premier League.

Blues have built a Championship worthy squad in League One and the hope is that Chris Davies’ side will be able to compete for back-to-back promotions. Blues are on course to return to the Championship after their unbeaten start to the league campaign continued on Monday with a 3-1 win over promotion rivals Wrexham.

US-based Knighthead handed manager Davies and technical director Craig Gardner a transfer war-chest to sign 17 new players in the summer. The most eye-catching of those arrivals saw Jay Stansfield return to St Andrew’s on a permanent basis.

Asked whether more Stansfield-type deals could follow when Blues return to the Championship, Wagner told BirminghamLive: “We will continue to build and invest in the club as needed. The hope would be that the squad performs exceptionally well. We have a group of young men who we feel are able to take us wherever we want to go, but if we need to make some changes certainly nothing will stop us from doing it.”

Relegation wasn’t part of Knighthead’s plan but it hasn’t deterred Blues chairman Wagner and Co. If anything, Blues have been even more aggressive in the transfer window to take advantage of lax spending rules in League One.

Wagner added: “It was very frustrating to experience relegation last season but it doesn’t change our ambition in any way. Ultimately, it just hardened our commitment to doing what we needed to do to bring the club to a better place to really drive excellence throughout every area of the organisation.”
