Birmingham City Open Talks With 12-Goal 23-Year-Old Star Ahead Of Summer Move

Birmingham City have opened talks with Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku, who is set to become a free agent in the coming weeks.

That is according to a fresh report from Football Insider, who claim that the hierarchy at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park are looking to secure the Ghanaian’s services ahead of the club’s return to the Championship next season, although a fee will have to be paid as a result of Poku being under 24 years of age at the start of the current League One campaign.

Posh and Blues have become somewhat inseparable from each other in the headlines over the last week, with Chris Davies’ side securing promotion at the Weston Homes Stadium last Tuesday – in which Poku netted a fine equaliser – before Darren Ferguson’s youthful and dynamic outfit produced a turn up for the books against the third-tier champions at Wembley Stadium, winning the EFL Trophy final on Sunday in front of a 71,772 crowd which was largely dominated by those from the West Midlands.

However, ahead of the Easter weekend, it has been revealed that Poku’s representatives have begun negotiations over a switch to the Second City for the former Colchester United man.

Poku’s predicament has been a lengthy talking point among Posh supporters, having excelled for the club ever since joining from Colchester in 2021 ahead of their most-recent stint in the Championship.

That has been the only contract the one-time international signed with the club, with interest in recent times coming from the likes of Luton Town, Millwall and SPFL giants, Rangers.

Peterborough chairman, Darragh MacAnthony, also claimed in February that long-standing admirers, Burnley, looked to strike a deal which would’ve garnered the League One side funds, before Poku sustained a hamstring issue which kept him sidelined for three months, before recently returning to action.

Now Blues have begun talks with the winger’s representatives over a summer move to B9 after Poku turned down a club-record contract from his currrent employers, as he sets his sights on becoming an established performer in the division above.

Posh Director of Football and the man who led Birmingham to a double-winning season back in 1994/95, revealed to ITV on the night of Davies’ side’s promotion in Cambridgeshire that his former club were looking to poach one of Ferguson’s current players, before Poku’s powerful equaliser saw him run over to a section of the 4,000 travelling supporters, pointing towards his name on the back of his shirt.

That was one of 12 goals and six assists for the pacey winger in just 24 appearances in the league this term, which also included a hat-trick in a 6-1 thrashing in Boro’s local derby against Cambridge United.

Birmingham City continuing to plan ahead before Championship season

Whilst the deal for Poku will not break Jay Stansfield’s current club-record transfer fee, which owner Tom Wagner has stated, could be smashed over the summer, it is yet another example of Blues planning ahead for the challenges that will come their way after a record-breaking season in the third tier.

It was confirmed in January that Hannover 96 centre-back, Phil Neumman, will officially join the club on July 1st – the start date of the 2025/26 season – whilst Taylor Gardner-Hickman also saw his initial loan switch from Bristol City made permanent for a £1.5m sum.

Excitement in these parts failed to dissipate after last weekend’s underwhelming performance under the arch, with these fresh revelations only backing up why Bluenoses are looking forward to what they hope, will be a strong first season back in the Championship.

They still have six games in League One to navigate through in which they could smash Wolves’ current points record of 103 and Reading’s all-time EFL record of 106, with the first of those coming on Good Friday against Crawley Town.
