Bajic, who joined the club in the summer of 2022, has played just one game for the Robins and that came in a 3-1 home defeat to League One side Lincoln City in November 2022, so his time at Ashton Gate hasn’t seen him play much football.

The Frenchman was on the bench for all but three of the Robins’ games in all competitions last season but failed to make a single appearance with Max O’Leary being favoured, and it puts him in the awkward position of being second choice but needing regular game time elsewhere.

He spent the second half of the 2022/23 season on loan at French Ligue 2 side Valenciennes, but hasn’t played a competitive game of football since.

Bristol City told to send Stefan Bajic on loan this summer

Our Bristol City fan pundit, Tom Sandy, believes that Bajic is the player at the club most in need of a loan, but understands it may be difficult to do so as he’s O’Leary’s backup and could be needed if he were to suffer an injury or suspension.

Speaking to Football League World, Tom said: “If there was one player in Bristol City’s team to loan out for their development, it would be goalkeeper Stefan Bajic. The Frenchman is only 22 and there’s plenty of potential there, he’s still young, especially for a goalkeeper.

“As our backup goalkeeper he’s not going to get that much experience. He’s playing for the U21’s, but you want to get him that first-team experience playing in front of fans and with pressure. He’s not going to get that this season, which is why I’d want to loan him out, but with an option to recall him at anytime would be ideal.

“He hasn’t really played at all since we signed him in 2022 from Pau FC. He went on loan in January 2023, but he was at the club for the whole of last season without seeing too much of the pitch, Max O’Leary is by far our number one goalkeeper and Bajic will not be able to compete with him for the number one spot without going out on loan to get experience.

“Obviously, we don’t want to let our backup goalkeeper go, but we’ve signed Lewis Thomas from Forest Green Rovers and I haven’t seen too much of him, but because we have another backup, I would want Bajic to go out on loan.”

Stefan Bajic needs to be playing regular football

Bajic is at the age where he needs to be playing regular football, no matter what the level, but it’s difficult as he’s currently second choice and could be needed at any moment.

Given his lack of opportunities, if he was called upon there would be a risk that he could be undercooked, and not ready, so it gives Bristol City boss Liam Manning a real headache.

The Robins do have Lewis Thomas on his books who has League One and League Two experience under his belt thanks to a spell with Forest Green Rovers, so if Bajic was to leave on loan, there would be cover for O’Leary.

The perfect situation for Bristol City would be arranging a loan for Bajic with a clause that means he can be recalled at any moment as it would allow him to play on a regular basis and Thomas could cover for O’Leary. Should anything then happen to the two goalkeepers, Bajic could be recalled.

The Frenchman’s contract at Ashton Gate expires next summer, so it’s an important year for him, and he’ll want to play as often as possible.
