🚨 JEMELE HILL DEMANDS APOLOGIES FOR ANGEL REESE AS WNBA STAR REACHES FINALS — HER CRITICS AREN’T READY TO BACK DOWN

Jemele Hill has a message for Angel Reese’s critics: It may be time to admit they got her wrong.

Angel Reese has reached the WNBA Finals with the Atlanta Dream, and prominent sports journalist Jemele Hill believes the forward deserves apologies from people who questioned her ability, criticized her performances, or doubted her long-term potential.

Following Atlanta’s 85–83 victory over the New York Liberty in Game 3 of the semifinals, Hill posted a message on social media that quickly reignited the debate surrounding Reese.

“Let the apologies be as loud as the disrespect. Whole ‘lotta people owe Angel Reese an apology,” Hill wrote.

But while Reese’s supporters are celebrating her postseason breakthrough, some critics remain unconvinced that reaching the Finals means every previous criticism was unfair.

And that is where this debate gets interesting.

ANGEL REESE HAS TURNED HER FIRST ATLANTA SEASON INTO A STATEMENT

Reese’s journey to the WNBA Finals represents a major milestone in her professional career.

After spending her first two WNBA seasons with the Chicago Sky, Reese moved to Atlanta in a blockbuster trade. Chicago struggled during her time there, while Atlanta entered the 2026 season with expectations of competing near the top of the Eastern Conference.

Now, Reese and the Dream have advanced to the championship series after sweeping the Liberty in the semifinals.

Atlanta’s decisive 85–83 victory in Game 3 completed the series sweep and secured the franchise’s first Finals appearance since 2013. The Dream will face the Golden State Valkyries, who eliminated the defending champion Las Vegas Aces.

That achievement gives Reese a new opportunity to change the conversation surrounding her career.

Reaching the Finals does not automatically erase every weakness in a player’s game. However, it does demonstrate that Reese can contribute to a successful team and perform in meaningful postseason moments.

For a player who has spent much of her young career under an intense media spotlight, that matters.

WHY JEMELE HILL BELIEVES REESE DESERVES AN APOLOGY

Hill’s argument is about more than one playoff series.

Reese has faced criticism over her offensive efficiency, shooting limitations, public comments, and the constant comparisons between her career and that of Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark.

Some criticism has focused on legitimate basketball questions. Others have crossed into personal attacks or arguments that have little to do with what Reese contributes on the court.

Hill appears to believe that at least some of Reese’s harshest critics should reconsider their assessments after watching her help Atlanta reach the Finals.

The forward has also earned recognition for her defensive contributions. Her impact cannot be evaluated solely through scoring totals because rebounding, defensive positioning, second-chance opportunities, and physical play are important parts of her game.

Still, an apology is not automatically required whenever an athlete improves or reaches a new milestone.

The more important question is whether the original criticism was reasonable based on the evidence available at the time—or whether it was unfair, personal, or rooted in assumptions that the player has since disproved.

That distinction should matter to both Reese’s supporters and her critics.

THE CAITLIN CLARK COMPARISON IS NOT GOING AWAY

Any major Angel Reese development seems to bring Caitlin Clark into the conversation.

The two stars have become central figures in the WNBA’s modern popularity, attracting enormous attention from fans, commentators, and social media audiences.

Their playing styles are different, however.

Clark is known for her perimeter shooting, playmaking, and ability to create scoring opportunities from long range. Reese’s strengths include rebounding, interior physicality, and defensive activity.

Comparing them can generate interesting basketball discussion, but treating every achievement as a direct contest between the two can distort the bigger picture.

Reese reaching the Finals before Clark is a notable milestone. It does not establish that Reese is the better overall player, just as Clark’s individual accomplishments do not automatically diminish Reese’s contributions.

Both players can be successful without one needing to fail for the other to receive recognition.

That is a message the WNBA conversation could use more often.

The league benefits when fans debate basketball intelligently, recognize different types of excellence, and allow players to develop without turning every performance into a referendum on a rival.

REACHING THE FINALS IS IMPORTANT—BUT WINNING THE TITLE WOULD BE EVEN BIGGER

Hill’s comments are likely to become even more significant if Atlanta wins the championship.

A Finals appearance is an important achievement, but a title would give Reese and the Dream an opportunity to deliver the ultimate result.

For Reese, a championship in her first season with Atlanta would strengthen the argument that she can contribute to a winning environment at the highest level.

It would also give her supporters a powerful response to those who have questioned whether her style of play can translate into postseason success.

However, Atlanta still faces a formidable challenge against Golden State.

The Valkyries have also demonstrated their postseason strength by sweeping the defending champion Aces. The Finals will test Atlanta’s ability to maintain its defensive intensity, control the boards, execute in late-game situations, and handle the pressure of a championship series.

Reese cannot win the championship alone. Atlanta will need contributions from its entire roster, particularly when opponents adjust their defensive strategies.

That is why the Finals represent an opportunity for both individual recognition and collective achievement.

DO ANGEL REESE’S CRITICS REALLY OWE HER AN APOLOGY?

This is the question dividing fans.

One side believes Reese has been unfairly targeted and that her progress deserves greater acknowledgment. Supporters argue that she has been judged more harshly than other players and that her contributions are sometimes overlooked when the conversation focuses on controversy.

The other side believes criticism is part of professional sports. Reaching the Finals does not make every negative assessment wrong, particularly when those assessments concern shooting, turnovers, or other basketball-related weaknesses.

Both arguments can contain some truth.

Sports analysis should allow room for criticism without turning it into personal hostility. At the same time, critics should be willing to update their opinions when a player improves, changes teams, or demonstrates abilities that were previously questioned.

If someone argued that Reese could never become an important contributor to a championship contender, Atlanta’s Finals run gives that person a reason to revisit the claim.

If someone criticized a specific weakness in her game, however, that criticism does not necessarily become invalid simply because her team is successful.

The fairest approach is to acknowledge what Reese has accomplished without pretending that every criticism was unjustified.

That is a stronger argument than demanding that every skeptic suddenly become a fan.

THE WNBA’S BIGGEST WIN COULD BE A MORE INTELLIGENT FAN DEBATE

The controversy surrounding Reese reflects a broader challenge for the WNBA.

The league’s biggest stars attract attention from people who follow basketball closely and from casual fans drawn in by rivalries, personalities, and viral moments.

That attention can help grow the sport, but it can also encourage conversations that prioritize arguments over actual basketball analysis.

Reese, Clark, and other prominent players deserve to be evaluated on their performances while also being treated with basic respect.

Fans can disagree about rankings, statistics, awards, and playing styles. They can criticize a player’s decisions or question whether a team has what it takes to win a championship.

But there is a meaningful difference between criticizing performance and attacking a person’s character.

A championship run provides an opportunity to reconsider opinions, recognize improvement, and appreciate the athletes who have helped make the league more compelling.

It should not require everyone to agree about Reese to recognize that reaching the Finals is a significant accomplishment.

MY PREDICTION: ANGEL REESE HAS A CHANCE TO CHANGE THE CONVERSATION AGAIN

Reese has already given herself a major opportunity to reshape the discussion surrounding her career.

Her next challenge is to help Atlanta finish the job against Golden State.

If the Dream win the championship, Reese will have another major achievement to add to her résumé, and Hill’s argument about critics reconsidering their opinions will become even more prominent.

If Atlanta falls short, that will not erase the progress Reese has made this season. Reaching the Finals remains a significant accomplishment, even if the final result does not go her team’s way.

My view is simple: Reese deserves recognition for what she has accomplished, but the strongest response to criticism is continued performance.

She does not need every critic to apologize. She needs to keep developing, contribute to winning basketball, and show what she can do when the stakes are highest.

The Finals provide the perfect stage.

And with the Dream preparing to face the Valkyries, the next chapter of Reese’s story could be the biggest one yet.

FINAL TAKE

Jemele Hill’s demand for apologies has reignited the debate about how Angel Reese is evaluated, but the bigger story is what Reese and the Atlanta Dream have accomplished.

Atlanta is heading to the WNBA Finals, Reese has reached a new career milestone, and her performance has given supporters plenty to celebrate.

Whether every critic owes her an apology remains open to debate.

One thing is clear: Angel Reese has earned the opportunity to compete for a championship, and the basketball world will be watching to see what happens next.
