Ipswich Town 36-year-old forward clarifies stance on future, contract up this summer

Ipswich Town have a decision to make regarding the long-term future of the player when his loan deal away expires at the end of the season.

Ipswich Town’s Conor Chaplin, who is on loan at Portsmouth, has admitted he has ‘no idea’ what the future holds for him this summer.

Ipswich Town let the attacker join their fellow Championship side on a temporary basis last September. He is due to return to ITFC at the end of the season.

Chaplin, 29, sees his contract at Portman Road expire in late June though and he is due to become a free agent as things stand. He has made 34 league appearances for Portsmouth in this campaign and he has chipped in with two goals and three assists as they aim to secure their second tier status.

In this latest update regarding his situation, he has said, as per a report by The News: “God knows, I honestly have no idea at the moment. To be honest, I haven’t thought about it – and I don’t want to think about it. I don’t want to give energy to anything else, other than making sure this club is in the Championship next season. It would mean the world to me for this club to be in the Championship next season, so I just want to make sure that happens first.”

Ipswich Town update regarding loaned out attacker Conor Chaplin

Ipswich Town have a decision to make on what to do next with Chaplin. Most signs point towards him heading out the ITFC exit door permanently when his deal runs out.

The fact the Tractor Boys allowed him to depart for Portsmouth suggests he is no longer in their plans. He faces strong competition for his position in Suffolk from attacking players like Jack Clarke, Jaden Philogene and Sindre Walle Egeli, among others, hence why he was given the green light to leave.

Chaplin has enjoyed plenty of game time at Portsmouth this term. Their chances of swooping for him full-time will depend on what division they are in as they battle for safety under the guidance of John Mousinho.

Ipswich Town signed the Worthing-born man back in 2021 from Barnsley and he helped them gain back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League. The ex-Coventry City man has fired 55 goals in 174 matches for his parent club.

What now for Ipswich Town and Conor Chaplin?

Ipswich Town’s immediate focus will be on finishing in 2nd position. ITFC seem unlikely to keep Chaplin, regardless of what league they find themselves in next season.

He appears coy on his plans and he is aiming to keep Portsmouth avoid relegation first and foremost. If Pompey stay up, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them offer him a deal.

The Tractor Boys lost 2-0 to Chaplin’s loan club last time out. Kieran McKenna’s side were poor and need to bounce back as soon as possible.

They remain 2nd in the table behind Coventry City but they have the likes of Millwall, Southampton and Middlesbrough chasing them down. Next up is a clash against the latter at home this weekend as they seek to return to winning ways.
