Mapapalangi on first NRL try and Tigers win

CASTLEFORD TIGERS’ newest recruit Krystian Mapapalangi has revealed that he turned down a move to Leigh Leopards a couple of years ago. The 23-year-old centre, who can also play on the wing and in the halves, scored five tries in 15 appearances for Wests’ New South Wales Cup side and has also played six times in the NRL in 2022 and 2024.

The powerful forward, who arrives at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle with a growing reputation for impact and athleticism, admitted that Leigh were keen to secure his services and presented an attractive proposition. However, after weighing up his options, Mapapalangi felt Castleford offered a clearer pathway for development and a challenge that better suited his ambitions.

Speaking after his move was confirmed, Mapapalangi explained that the decision was not taken lightly. Leigh’s recent rise and their competitive edge in Super League made them a serious contender, but ultimately the Tigers’ vision swayed him. He pointed to the club’s long-term plans, the style of rugby they want to play, and the opportunity to test himself in a demanding environment as decisive factors.

“Leigh showed a lot of interest and that meant a lot to me,” Mapapalangi said. “They’re a strong club and what they’ve achieved recently speaks for itself. But when I sat down and thought about where I could grow the most as a player, Castleford felt like the right fit.”

Castleford’s coaching staff have been vocal about the attributes Mapapalangi brings to the squad. Known for his work rate, physical presence, and willingness to take on tough carries, he is seen as a player who can add energy and competition to the pack. For a club keen to rebuild momentum and re-establish itself as a force in Super League, his arrival is viewed as a statement of intent.

Mapapalangi also highlighted the conversations he had with the Tigers’ coaches as a major influence. He felt their belief in his potential and clarity about his role within the team gave him confidence that he could make a real impact. Rather than being one option among many, he sensed that Castleford genuinely wanted him to be part of their core group moving forward.

“There was honesty in the talks I had with Cas,” he added. “They were clear about what they expect from me and how they see me improving. That kind of trust is important when you’re making a big decision.”

Turning down Leigh was not without its challenges. The Leopards’ success and strong squad depth would have offered Mapapalangi a chance to compete at the highest level straight away. But he believes that embracing a tougher route will ultimately make him a better player.

Castleford supporters will be hoping that faith is rewarded. As the Tigers look to blend youth, hunger, and experience, Mapapalangi’s commitment to the cause could prove crucial. His decision to reject a rival Super League club underlines his determination to back himself and grow within a system that demands resilience and consistency.

For Mapapalangi, the message is clear: this move is about more than just immediate success. It is about development, belief, and proving that choosing the harder path can sometimes be the most rewarding one of all.
