$620,000 Halfback Set to Leave Newcastle Knights Amid Roster Shake-Up

Newcastle Knights halfback Jack Cogger is reportedly set to depart the club, marking the end of his second stint in the red and blue. While the Knights have yet to confirm the move officially, multiple sources close to the club suggest Cogger is exploring opportunities elsewhere ahead of the 2026 NRL season.

Cogger, 28, rejoined the Knights in 2024 after successful spells with the Canterbury Bulldogs and Penrith Panthers, including a premiership-winning campaign with the latter. His return to Newcastle was seen as a homecoming and a chance to bolster the club’s playmaking depth alongside Kalyn Ponga, Jackson Hastings, and Tyson Gamble. However, his time back at the club has been mixed, with injuries and selection inconsistencies limiting his impact.

Despite being under contract until the end of 2026, sources indicate that the Knights’ evolving roster strategy and tight salary cap situation may be forcing an early exit. The club is believed to be making room for emerging talent such as Fletcher Sharpe and looking to reinvest in other key positions, particularly the forward pack and spine.

Cogger has played a utility role in 2025, often rotating in and out of the match-day squad. While he’s shown flashes of the composure and game management that made him a reliable presence at Penrith, he has struggled to secure a consistent starting spot in a competitive halves rotation.

There is believed to be interest in Cogger from both NRL and Super League clubs, with several teams valuing his experience, professionalism, and ability to step into a playmaking role at short notice. Clubs seeking to strengthen their depth in the halves or add leadership to their squad may find Cogger an ideal fit.

For Newcastle, the move may be part of a broader roster refresh. Reports in recent months have linked several senior players, including Daniel Saifiti and Jayden Brailey, with potential exits as the club looks to retool for a more balanced and future-focused lineup.

If Cogger does move on, it will mark the end of an era for a player who came through the Knights’ junior system and debuted with the club in 2016. While his second tenure may not have reached the heights hoped for, his professionalism and experience have made him a valued member of the squad.

A formal announcement is expected in the coming weeks as the club finalizes its 2026 roster plans.
