Wrexham Defender Admits Feeling ‘Rusty’ Ahead Of Facing Boyhood Club Birmingham City

Wrexham continued a strong start to the new season by beating Salford City 2-1 in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy on Tuesday night.

After the high of a derby day win over Shrewsbury Town, Wrexham had a much lower-profile game on Tuesday night.

Wrexham made a host of changes for this one and Paul Mullin – given a first start of the season after injury – opened the scoring with a fine left-footed finish.

Conor McAleny brought Salford level after the break before a Josh Austerfield own goal handed Wrexham the victory.

Will Boyle may still look to claim that goal but Phil Parkinson won’t mind; a goal is a goal, a win is a win and Wrexham have kept the momentum going.

James Jones was joined in midfield by Anthony Forde and Sebastian Revan, two players who are hardly familiar with playing in the middle of the pitch.

Revan’s makeshift role has been praised by Parkinson but one man who was certainly right at home was defender Dan Scarr.

The summer signing from Plymouth Argyle started in the heart of Wrexham’s back three as he looks to get up to speed.

Scarr has yet to make a League One start for Wrexham and this was only his second appearance for the club, starting against Salford after featuring against Sheffield United in August.

New Signing | Dan Scarr

Scarr, understandably, isn’t at his absolute best right now and he has even admitted that fact.

The defender told Wrexham’s official YouTube channel that he felt a little ‘rusty’ against Salford but was expecting such a performance having barely featured this season.

Scarr added that he felt the team put in a great performance even if he didn’t feel completely at his best.

“I think I felt a little bit rusty on a personal note, but I think that’s to be expected,” said Scarr. “I thought the lads were really good and they put in a professional performance.

“We had lads playing out of position, lads that haven’t been involved, so I think it’s credit to the team for putting on a good performance,” he added.

Scarr set for Birmingham City reunion

Scarr at least got some game time and may feel just a little sharper ahead of Monday’s big game against Birmingham City.

This is a game close to Scarr’s heart given that he joined his boyhood club Birmingham in 2017 having emerged in non-league football.

The defender picked out Birmingham as the fixture he was most looking forward to given that he grew up supporting the club.

Scarr is unlikely to start though with Wrexham’s centre backs in great form to start the new season.

Parkinson has suggested that Scarr must remain patient in his quest for first-team football, but he will be ready to play off the bench if needed at Birmingham.

With Scarr a Birmingham fan and teammate Lewis Brunt an Aston Villa fan, Monday’s game means a lot to certain players in the Wrexham squad – and they will be ready to go if called upon.
